Because I am making you wait for part 2 of Craft Theory #5 -it’s hard to get information when you’re stupid- I thought I’d tide you over a quick story.
Who is MJ?
I suppose a little bit of a back story is in order. For those of you who don’t know anything about basketball, Michael Jordan (MJ) is unarguably the best player to ever enter the NBA. He has an insane average of 30.1 points per game for his entire career. To put that into perspective the best player of present day NBA -not necessarily right now, but on average- LeBron James, has a career average of 27.1 points per game and he is still putting up great numbers.
What is the “Flu Game”?
In the 1997 NBA finals, Michael Jordan had led his team to a win while having a reported fever of over 100°F (38°C). He scored 38 points and the bulls took a 3 games to 2 lead in the best of 7 series.
My Flu Game
On Thursday, February 2nd, 2017 my basketball team was set to play against nearby town’s team. The problem: two of our best players were missing. I wasn’t originally going to play, as I had had a terrible cold. However, with these two guys missing, I knew my civic duty. I had to carry the team to a win.
Unlike MJ, I have a hard time scoring 20+ points (MJ had the ball most of the time. I get the ball pretty much only after rebounds). Instead, I was there to motivate the team and get them scoring. I also added 6 points of my own 14 rebounds, and 4 gigantic blocks (including one where my wrist had reached over the rim).
Right after the game, my head started to pound and my face became super flush. I asked one of my teammates to feel my forehead and he flung his hand back saying, “Holy $#&% that burns!”. I got home and checked my temperature which happened to be 97°F (36°C)!
We still won the game 56-43, but I had felt it the next few days. My word of advice, if you’re sick...stay home! Your team will be fine.
