Premise:
A typical Anglo-Saxon Longhouse from circa 410 A.D. up until the Norman Conquest in 1066 A.D.
This is one of many builds which will form part of a larger project I am heading up, working on alongside Dwarfsosi, Creativname and Nekso. Our goal is to recreate an accurate, well-scaled, and atmospheric Wintanceaster (Winchester) circa 927 A.D. Brief Historical Summary of Anglo-Saxon Architecture:
Anglo-Saxon longhouses were normally post-built structures, where timber posts were driven into the ground, and the space between the posts filled in with wattle and daub, or occasionally, planks.
The floors were generally made from packed earth, though planks were sometimes used. The most common roofing material was thatch, although this varied, with reports of wooden shingles and even turf, also being used.
Only ten of the hundreds of settlement sites that have been excavated in England from this period have revealed masonry domestic structures and these are confined to a few quite specific contexts. Most commonly, it is thought that Anglo–Saxons built using timber out of conscious choice.
Historian, Le Goff, suggests that the Anglo-Saxon period was defined by its use of wood, providing evidence for the care and craftsmanship which the Anglo-Saxons invested, from cups to halls as well as the frequent use of trees and timber in place names, literature, and religion.
