In the mid-1930s, the Wehrmacht leadership created the concept of equipping the army with three types of all-wheel drive vehicles - light, medium and heavy. They had to be unified and produced by several car factories at once. This is how a unique school of designing military off-road vehicles arose, which is sometimes called German. The concept involved constructing all models of military all-terrain vehicles according to the same scheme: the base was a spar frame, both suspensions were independent, a locking center differential was required, the width of the front and rear tracks was the same, the body was of simple shape with a tented top. Each manufacturer was allowed to use its own power unit, unified with passenger cars and truck models.

By the end of the 1930s, the Horch company, part of the Auto Union concern since 1932, had considerable experience in creating military vehicles, so its appointment as the lead developer of the medium and heavy SUV families was a logical step. Taking as a basis its first experimental all-wheel drive staff vehicles of the 740 and 770 models of 1932-1934, the company presented its first example of the new medium-sized family in 1937 and quickly began its production. The new car received the index “901”.

If we compare this all-terrain vehicle with analogues of that time, then, most likely, the American heavy SUV Dodge WC is suitable for this role.

The 901 was produced in three places at once - at the Horch and Wanderer factories that were part of the Auto Union concern, as well as at the production facilities of Opel, which the Germans nationalized from the American corporation General Motors at the beginning of the war. Products of the Horch and Wanderer brands bore the index 901, but Opel was designated by the letters MPI. Another difference between the Opel version was the weaker 6-cylinder engine with 68 hp. at 2800 rpm, unified with other models of the company. It was installed on both the Admiral passenger car and the Blitz cargo truck.

К концу 1930-х годов фирма Horch, с 1932 года входящая в концерн Auto Union, имела немалый опыт создания военных машин, поэтому назначение ее головным разработчиком среднего и тяжелого семейств внедорожников было вполне логичным шагом. Приняв за основу свои первые опытные полноприводные штабные машины моделей «740» и «770» образца 1932-1934 годов, фирма представила в 1937 году свой первый образец нового среднего семейства и быстро приступила к его производству. Новая машина получила индекс «901».
