Seeing the new updates to caves made me think that the Nether, which is effectively a giant cave would really benefit from those same changes



This datapack is a slightly focused bag of ideas I've had for the nether that hopefully feel close to vanilla Minecraft, or like it fits within ideas of vanilla Minecraft
A few general ideas that this datapack follow are as such
  -Allow full functionality of base vanilla features.
    -Trying to get a mix of column terrain and flat terrain specifically for hoglin hunts to still happen and not be clunky from the terrain
    -Maintain some form of lava ocean or lake or river system for strider travel
  -Create more integrated nether content. In vanilla the biome placement is rather random, alongside the 1.16 materials being very biome specific.


General Biome Changes
  • Each biome "category" has been altered. This in-game likely will have no effect whatsoever. The "category" is asked for by hard code in certain circumstances, so I figured changing them to more normal biome categories might have some impact, beyond the simple "nether" category. The only category that may have any impact is the 'ocean' category since it's supposed to way all 'ocean' categorized biomes against each other


  • "starts" is the structure list and I've reordered it. There may be potential that structures lower on the list could overwrite portions of other structures if they generate near each other. I've reordered them to reflect importance to gameplay, and environmental storytelling. Does it make sense for a part of a bastion to be re-written by a nether fossil? Not particularly, and doing this hopefully helps avoid that. I haven't personally noticed an impact when regarding the structures yet.


  • "features" has also been reordered in each biome to actual impactful outcomes. The Minecraft Wiki describes the feature slots as being utilized specifically for certain portions of generation, like a 'raw_generation' step, and a 'foiliage_generation' step. But you can actually place your features in any step you like, with caveats. Like the 'lake' slot may have special hard coded stuff I'm not aware of connecting to it. But at least you can move around any feature without much fuss from the game. So I've moved any raw terrain and block altering to the top of the list, with the slightly more complicated structures/features a bit further down, then ores, then the plant materials, and any modifier pieces get placed immediately after the target feature or onto the next generation step. For instance "prototype_nether_ore_snow_block" is placed before "prototype_nether_ore_powder_snow" so that the powder snow generation will more likely catch the snow blocks that are already there and change them.


  • "spawners" is the spawnlist for the biome. I've gone through an organized them based on the English alphabet for my own sake when editing. I've also added spawns to the "under_water_creature", and "water_creature" even though they can only activate in the presence of water, which the nether has none of. But even still I felt 'why not?' These spawn lists may still be useful for other, none-water related spawns. I just haven't messed with them.




-Right now I've tweaked the noise settings to make the terrain create a floor, a ceiling, with columns connecting between
-The biome noise spread has also been altered
  -Nether wastes are meant to be a neutral biome
  -Basalt Deltas tend to be found alongside Lava Lakes
  -Soul Valleys tend to be found near Basalt Deltas and Lava Lakes
  -The Nether Forests contest each other for the same spawn space so you'll tend to find them near each other
    -Warped Forests will tend to be more surrounded by crimson forests
    -The forests will tend to be near the Nether Wastes and Soul Valleys
  -Polar Chasms will tend to oppose 'hot' biomes, meaning Basalt Deltas > Lava Lakes > Soul Valleys
    -Polar Chasms will still be found in amongst Basalt deltas but are more common in nether wastes

  -With how the biome noise functions in-between or transitionary biomes are possible although would take a lot of number scrambling to get desirable results.
-2 new biomes
  -The Lava Lakes are there to stand in for a proper 'ocean' biome in the nether
  -The Polar Chasm is a direct idea rip from the Biomes O' Plenty mod for testing and fun.
    -Adds icebergs, ice patches, snow and packed ice blobs, blue ice, obsidian
    -Strays spawn here
    -Chasms will also spawn in small splotchy patches so they'll be rare to find, but once you've found one many other will be nearby




-Nether related structures, such as the nether fossils and ruined portals have had void blocks added to them to make them not carve out a square where they spawn

-Replicated the new prototype caves but for the nether
-Crimson and Warped Forests have a wart matt ceiling with weeping vines and shroomlight respectively. They imitate moss ceilings.
-Crimson vines, twisting vines, the nether forest vegetation features all utilize the new mechanics now
-Reshuffled the features within biomes to hopefully get better results with some placements
-Altered all the spawn weights in each biome.
  -Blazes spawn in Basalt Deltas
  -Wither Skeletons Spawn in Soul Valleys
  -Endermites spawn in Warped Forests
  -Strays spawn in Polar Chasms
-(disabled atm) Added 'spawn costs' to all the hostile mobs and biomes (Not fully understanding how this affects actual gameplay yet)



Currently Known Issues

The "crimson_fungus", "crimson_fungus_planted", "warped_fungus", "warped_fungus_planted", seem to cause crashes on servers. Replacing them with the vanilla versions, or outright deleting them will solve this issue if you run into it.

This pack does have a tendency to make java use a ton of memory so that can be an issue, especially when generating more world

Strays are meant to spawn in Polar Chasms but I have yet to see another other that piglins and ghasts spawn in the polar chasm, which both are supposed to be rare in this particular biome. Normal skeletons as well as wither skeletons seem to have trouble spawning here as well. Strays do also have a hard coded spawn in the overworld that dictates that %80 of skeletons on the surface in a 'snowy' biome turn into strays when exposed to the sky. This is a problem since 1, this it the nether, 2 there is no light, and 3 I can set the polar chasms biome category to 'icy', but this still may not qualify it as a true icy biome, which might require "precipitation" to be active too

This is a beta test of sorts for 1.18. I've spent a lot of time tweaking the noise settings to get a good spread of cave variety
-Noodle Caves as well as the carvers have been disabled as the interfere with the lava generation in aquafers and the lava ocean
-The biomes are back to somewhat random placement. I've included depth in the spread so there will be a slight height variation in the biomes.
-Cave pillars are still generating
-Lava Lakes biome has been removed as lava lakes form naturally now
-Aquafers are enabled for varied height in the lava lakes. Makes some real nice ledges and caves
-Polar chasms aren't in this version yet as I've been messing with the settings too much

-There is now a 'deepslate' layer to the nether in the form of smooth basalt. It descends to -32
-Obsidian geodes can be found in the -Y layers. They contain ancient debris and crying obsidian
-Smooth Quartz geodes are added, they containt glowstone and deepslate redstone ore
-each forest will now have a slight chance to contain a patch of the counterpart nylium
-I added a tiny bit more ancient debris. It will be noticeable as 2 debris in close proximity. They'll spawn between -32 up to 24
-Need to re-add the soul valley bone columns, as well as the giant mushrooms to the forests, and maybe around randomly

Hello! I love the new nether. A little suggestion, the redstone geodes look strange, maybe it is better to change them to something like this:

I've been having issues making the smooth quartz fully wrap around the inner layers which is a part to why they look odd. I do intend to have a crack in the geode so that the glowstone and active redstone is visible. As for making it bigger; I kind of intended them to be a bit small, since they're full of glowstone, redstone, and smooth quartz, which requires smelting. The placement of the redstone within the glowstone layer is rather random, even if consolidating the spawns to the center.



Is there something specific you have in mind? For instance block choices. Also if you feel like stuff I have intended, like the geode size still feel off then mention it. I'm going for hat "feels" most vanilla and like it was intended to be in the Nether update or game as a whole.

Hello!
I meant that geodes have a strange combination of blocks.
I think a first layer of polished basalt or glowstone, a second layer of smooth quartz or calcite and finally the third layer of deepslate or cobbled deepslate with redstone ores would be better.
The size of the geodes is very good!

I could change the block set. It may be a bit before I update it though, I'm still messing with other stuff in the pack and get the rest of the 1.17 stuff into 1.18.

I haven't personally tested my pack on server or plugin servers like Paper or Spigot. But I don't know of any reason why it wouldn't

I've been testing it since the past 24 hours or so, paper crashed when it tried to generate the nether. I have the error logs.

There is a workaround, It requires me to generate the nether on a singleplayer world with the datapack first, move the world data to the server. But when I generate new chunks in the server, in the nether, paper crashes, I'm geussing nether chunk generation is causing paper to crash.
