Green. Such a precious color, you don’t see much of it anywhere in these parts. I crouch down to my knees and gently touch the soft fresh grass with my fingertips. It feels strange, weird, and almost alien. I notice it has a purple-ish tint to it and shake my head in disappointment. “Oh no, not this one too”, I mutter under my breath as I reach into my gray trousers for the beacon.
Fumbling with the beacon’s control pad, I manage to call it in directly to the boss, “Captain, this is Alan Cooper. Area G24 has been compromised. Looks like the purple has just spread to this section recently too.” “Thank you Cooper, return to the Ardent immediately, we will have to purge the area to prevent further contamination”, that old man replied. “Roger that. Cooper out.”
I press my face on one of the Ardent’s reinforced glass windows, peering out of one of our last operating spacecraft to watch the purge process. Pretty lights danced around in the dark gray smoke and fire that encompassed Area G24 and it’s surrounding mountains. This battle-cruiser was quite refined and advanced in it’s prime, equipped with laser cannons designed to pierce through heavy warship armor plating. However, after the end of the terrible War of Expedition 31 years ago, it has been resorted to extermination duties. The Purple virus which ravages the Earth to this day is a cancer. It poisons all plant life turning them into purple mutated monstrosities through a slow and gradual process. You can’t eat the food it produces, it makes the soil rotten purple and it’s spread on a global scale all thanks to the dumb War.
“So what did you find this time?”, I hear a familiar voice behind me. I turn my head to face Kelly, one of my long time friends from my days at the Academy. “Nah, nothing much Kelly. Just the same old purple infecting more green again, which the Ardent is shelling the crap of it right now. You know, for a second I had hope.... that we actually had clean grass for once.”
“Well, at least we have clean plants on the ship. One day, once we get rid of all the purple, we will be able to restore Earth to be green again with the plants we have”, says Kelly hopefully.
“Yeah, I hope I’ll be alive when that day comes. If only had we nipped this in the bud when it all started”, I said
It’s been over three decades since the virus encroached the planet and the epidemic won’t stop anytime soon. The War of Expedition pitted the nations into five main alliance groups against each other over the resource rich, inhabitable world of Gimpel. Gimpel was unlike the other space colonies, which required an expensive terraforming process that took decades. Gimpel had an atmosphere just like Earth.
The five alliances all set up camp on different areas of the planet and sent resources back to their motherland. But each tried to expand their territory and there was many disputes, which escalated into all out war. The Ardent space battle-cruiser, itself was a byproduct of the militarization arms race.
However, while all the powers of humanity were fighting each other, the purple virus suddenly appeared across the vegetation of the Earth. Scientists generally agree that it was carried from Gimpel. But, instead of stopping the war which killed over a billion, each faction still wanted to get the upper hand until the conditions worsened and the Purple eventually inhabited all of the main continents, destroying crops and turning the landscape into a evil purple blob. The Armistice Treaty ended the War of Expedition, and the alliances worked together to destroy the virus from spreading.
"Had the greedy people in power stop quarreling among each other sooner to deal with the Purple Virus, it would have not gotten this bad", I said, looking at the purple Earth below me.
