Basically he was originally a white fox who was taken into by an old witch who lived in the forest away from society.
Nothing was particularly different about it to make her want to isolate herself, she just hated the system.

One day Chauncey got caught in a fox trap and to save his life, the old woman turned him into an almost human.
She was executed for doing so, and he went on the run before being caught eventually and being subjected to slavery for being a quasi-human.

Quasi-humans were people or animals who tried to artificially/illegally become demi-humans, people born between human and beast. While demi-humans are regarded as good, almost blessings to their families, quasi-humans were looked down upon for trying to imitate them.

However, different quasi-humans received varying degrees of consequence. Because Chauncey was originally a beast, quite obvious from his ears and tail, he was subjected to being the slave and punching bag of the wealthiest in their society. Had his signs been less obvious, such as woodmen who appeared mostly human sans their pointy ears and lack of pupils.

However, Chauncey was lucky enough to be under one of the more eccentric and richest gamblers in their kingdom. So, one night on a whim, he was allowed to join in one of their games, and should he win, be allowed to continue until he lost. Luck being on his side, he was eventually able to buy back his freedom and become the best of the best.

He was able to live comfortably, and yet alone. Quasi- and demi-humans alike despised him, the former thinking he abandoned them and the latter being envious. Humans themselves were afraid of him, thinking him to be a big bad wolf who would ruin their society. Afterall, humans had conquered all of the issues of the world: poverty, discrimination, disease, starvation, and many more. Beasts could never understand how fragile their system was, so why should one of them be at the top with the very people who helped rid the world of said problems?

Chauncey himself never fancied himself with human affairs. He kept his interactions with them minimal, save for when he went out to take money away from those who didn't deserve him. Aside from that, he was completely alone.

That is, until he hired a certain nymph to be his personal butler, who would lead him on an adventure riddled with secret, betrayal, and the shackles of society which had blinded all those who lived within it.
