Vernon Rook and Michael Rogers are the Captain and First Officer of the U.S.S. Stargazer, a Speedwell Class Starship commissioned, christened, and built in 2132, along with 200+ others built in preparation for a war that never came, and was sold to a private firm in 2150 due to the massive loss of money from the mass-production of this particular class. the Stargazer was then chartered by the UESN Civilian Labor Corps, a government branch dedicated to boosting the economy. Vernon Rook was hired to be the captain of the Stargazer under the auspices of the CLC. He previously served aboard the UECS Sayonara for the United Earth Cargo Services, which was attacked by Abellian pirates in 2137, killing the Captain and putting Rook in command. he later resigned from the Cargo Services to become an agent for the United Earth Anti-Piracy Committee. on his first mission, he single-handedly recaptured the USS Mariner, an old Sputnik Class starship stolen by Abellian pirates 20 years prior. his next mission involved spying on the hub for pirates and illegal activity, and has been for nearly 75 years; Abel IV.
Abel IV, once known as Lewis-Clark, was one of the original 5 American "Inner Cluster" Colonies, along with New Providence (later New Earth), New Plymouth, Chesapeake (which failed), and New Jamestown (which was lost for 150 years but rediscovered in 2157 by [CLASSIFIED]). the planet prospered under the Lewis-Clarker Era, but the Cree'tor invaded it in 2044 during the First Cree'tor War and held it until the 2nd, when rebels massacred all of the Occupation Force. when an American starship was sent to congratulate the militias, they attacked the ship! it has remained independent since, and martial law is permanent, although the corrupt government allows pirates who pay their share to get away with literally murder. Rook is assigned to the USS Bowling Green, a Freemont Class Troop Transport. the transport was shot down by the defense arrays on one of Abel IV's 5 asteroidal moons, Cernan. the ship crashed and the 5 survivors had to trek from the Akeldama Excavation Site in the Iscariot Mountains to Arturo City, the planetary capital. while on the way there, they found the survivors of a UECS cargo ship that was raided, plundered, and sold for scrap 15 years ago. they stowed aboard the HWSS Gaetano, a large private cruiseliner stolen 5 years ago. they used an escape pod to flee from the ship, but were caught by the pirate gang leader. he destroyed the escape pod, killing all but Vernon! Vernon then was challenged to a gunfight, which he accepted. Vernon narrowly won, but the pirates weren't too happy about their leader's death. Vernon hijacked the leader's ship, the HMS Vendetta, and fled. the pirates followed, but Vernon was picked up by the UECS Damascus, which had heard the escape pod's distress signal. Vernon, with the help of his only surviving comrades (who were separated in the Arturo City sewers and found a sympathetic garbage ship captain) and the Damascus crew, killed the remaining pirates.
After this harrowing mission, Vernon immediately resigned from the UEAPC, and joined the New Earth Guard, on his home planet. 20 years later, he accepts a request to become a privately-chartered serviceman under the CLC, where he meets Michael Rogers, who also once worked for the UECS. they got along immediately, and Vernon requested that Rogers be his 1st Officer. the UESN accepted the request.
together, their first mission was to find out what happened to the USS [CLASSIFIED] in the Taurus Sector, and to hopefully prove that it's not the resurgence of [CLASSIFIED].
