Already, I had been surprised to see three hairy woodpecker together, whereas before I had only two. But it's far from the best thing I've seen this morning.
I saw, what I thought at first to be, a Chipping sparrow. It was quickly gone but when it came back, I realized it was a American tree sparrow! They had left my land a month ago, I thought they had migrated, being birds that left when warm weather approached. But actually, it's normal to see American tree sparrows in April. But why were they gone and then come back? But I know they will leave in May.
I was about to go on my balcony, when I saw in the distance, landing in front of one of my trees, two orange-cream colored birds with a black collar. That's all I could notice, from a distance, but I quickly suspected that they were two northern flickers! I still had doubts but when one of them went to my red maple, I had no more doubts.
Then, when they were gone, I was about to finally get out when I heard very close the song of a mourning dove. I looked from the window and I saw that on my balcony, a male was courting a female, he had even repelled another male! Finally, the two doves began to eat together in my seed tray and the male looked carefully around, to protect the female.
When I was outside, I saw a common grackle. They were rather rare, on my land!
It was a good morning, I was very satisfied. The northern flickers were the ones that gave me the most joy! But one thing remains a mystery to me...every time a black-capped chickadee sees me, it gives its territorial cry, as if I were a predator. Yet the other birds don't care if I'm there.
