What are Totemic Challenges
Totemic Challenges are tasks which should be completed within a limited time in hardcore mode.I provide a challenge, ideas for starting gear, a Minecraft seed and start location, but it’s up to you to complete it. You begin with a totem of undying and are off to complete your mission in any way you like. You can make it as easy or hard on yourself as you desire.
Lower difficulty suggestions
- Start with some food
- Start with a piece of armor
- Lower in-game difficulty to Normal
- Allow respawning through a datapack
- Bring a wholesome friend
Higher difficulty suggestions
- No sleeping through the night
- No shield
- No wearing armor
- Turn off natural regeneration /gamerule naturalRegeneration false
- Bring a not-so-wholesome friend
How we play
On my server, I alternate long term survival multiplayer with Totemic Challenges (usually for the weekend). Those who participate and even complete the challenge gain Totemic Tokens to spend on unbreakable Totemic gear (meaning: retextured golden tools, inspired by theDeCoda’s Totemic Items).We use Dahson’s Hardcore Respawn datapack that has been altered to use emerald blocks instead of diamond blocks to stick with the theme. For us, helping other players respawn keeps everyone involved and provides space to learn from mistakes, but you are free to play in true hardcore mode.
After the challenge time is done, we create a room with comments and armor stands relating to the most memorable moments.
How you can play
You can play the challenges yourself!Generate the world in hardcore, give yourself a totem and the starting items, and try to complete the challenge any way you like! You can make it extra difficult for yourself if you’d like.
Extended Tutorial: Setting up in Singleplayer/LAN
- In the main menu click: Create a New World
- Set Game Mode to Hardcore (Or Hard if you’re playing with a hardcore respawn datapack, and put the datapack(s) you’re using in the pack folder)
- Click More World Options… and enter the seed for the world generator
- Create your world
- Go into creative and spawn in the starting items manually (or use the code below in a commandblock for a prefilled barrel)
- Return to survival
- Try to complete the challenge

A highly recommended watch!
