O convento do Carmo é uma das mais antigas construções
do Rio de Janeiro. foi construido em 1619 e com a chegada
do Príncipe-Regente Dom João VI e da corte portuguesa em
1808, o Convento do Carmo foi confiscado e aí foi alojada a
Rainha Maria I de Portugal, local onde ela passou os últimos
8 anos de sua vida. A igreja do convento foi transformada em
Capela Real e Catedral. Entre 1840 e 1896, o convento abrigou o Instituto Histórico e Geográfico Brasileiro.
