This is just a note to everybody browsing this forum: if somebody posts a .jar or .exe file and asks you to execute it, don't run it before a moderator has seen the thread. Report them immediately. Don't post in it, don't ask if it works, just report the thread for being an executable.

Thanks

I rarely use a "virus scanner". I never have "active" protection from virus.

If you download a .jar, simply open it with winrar or 7zip and see if the files are a Minecraft mod or not.

Minecraft mods are just a bunch of Java read by Forge and Minecraft, so you could easily put a virus there. Java isn't the best language when it comes to viruses, but it could download something better suited for a virus and run it on your computer.

Forge reads the files in the Mods folder, it doesn't run the file, as that would do nothing, it just gets the data from it.

You ever used chickenbones mods? GO install CodeChickenCore. Run it, and then go look in your mods folder.
You'll notice you've now got a ChickenBonesLib too, which you've never seen before.

Lets pretend ChickenBonesLib has code to download other files just like how it was download itself. It navigates to MyAwesomeViruses.com, and downloads one of it's choice. Once downloaded, it automatically runs the file. Boom, you're infected.

(CBL is clean by the way, just a popular and well known example of a mod which is installed without you doing anything.)

Before I run new files, I always use my antivirus software to scan them before running.

That will work perfectly but anti-virus programs are always one step behind of the virus.

Good point Paril, but I must say most virus programs such as Norton Internet Security scan files before you can use them.

Does minecraft.jar and minecraft.exe count??? I know it has no viruses but for some reason my PC is picking up viruses from the stupidest of things like simply opening a file.

As a fellow Linux user (Mint 15 XFCE), you must remember:
- Programs that aren't known viruses but still affect your computer.
- Programs that known Windows viruses that can infect via WINE.
Linux, though much less prone to viruses, is not completely safe, as with all other OS's.

Thank you for being the first one here to have sense. Every person I see on this forum who has a Mac or a linux distro thinks they're invincible.

ParilBatch files are less dangerous because they are plain text and readable by anybody, whereas executables are harder to decompile in some cases. Still, they count, as users can easily make a batch file to wipe hard drives.

-P

kinda of topic but .exe is still easy to code just change the .exe to .txt and then wullah your up and coding

May I ask, have you ever tried this?

One time I was stupid and found a link to a TNT mod on Youtube. I tried to download it, but Chrome wouldn't let me because it was a suspicious .EXE file. Thank goodness I didn't get it.
