Mojang Has Done It.

Most of you, I'm sure,
have heard about Mojang's updates to the EULA* regarding server monetization.

Prior to this happening, Minecraft had already seemed to be a game in decline, with hard sales numbers proving this. By now making it against the EULA to sell game-affecting features on your server, (including, but not limited to: fly, teleport, and multihome) Mojang have fired their own bullet with their own name on it, into a place they'd probably rather not have it.

At this point in the game's life, do you really think server owners will be wanting to change their whole donation process? With the addition of Realms, it appears Minecraft will most likely be seeing the end of servers as we know them, and transitioning into small Realms "friends" servers. For a game like Minecraft, the social aspect servers bring is crucial to keeping the game alive. Mojang has just ruined that for a lot of people. The future of Minecraft involves a handful of fiscally irresponsible twelve-year-olds with empty faction-type servers.

Tekkit SP, anyone?

Every server is unique and has its own culture; the playing field will adjust. Non pay-to-play servers with loyal communities can still thrive.
