if you can neither create nor edit the skins, open the "install_me_after_replace.mcpack" file in the .zip file. (mcpack is a package type for Minecraft add-ons / skin packs.)
hd capes: open a paint / picture editing program and cut off the lower half of your skin and save it (ctrl + s). Then open a Hd cape (HDcapeX.png) and drag your half skin over my skin and erase weird things (e.g. my headphone components). Then save it and follow the youtube tutorial.
Cape: overwrite your ENTIRE skin over my skin. If "An existing file is already there." stands, then press "Replace my file over it". Then follow the youtube tutorials. Whewww.... Yes, 1+1 is 2..
Important: You have to switch off "Only allow trustworthy skins"!
