c.1672-c.1725

Peter the Great was Tsar of Russia from 1682 to 1725. Born Peter Alekseyevich Romanov to Tsar Alexis I of Russia and his second wife Tsarina Natalya Naryshkina on the 9th June 1672 in the Russian capital of Moscow. His eldest brother, Feodor Alekseyevich succeeded their father's throne as Tsar Feodor III of Russia ruling from 1676 to 1672. Following Tsar Feodor III's premature death at the age of 20 years old, Peter succeeded his father's and brother's throne in 1682 at the age of just 10 years old - co-ruling with his second eldest brother Tsar Ivan V until Ivan's death in 1696.

One of, if not the most, successful accomplishments that Peter the Great had achieved was the westernisation and modernisation of Russia. One such case of this being the Grand Embassy, where Russian diplomats, as well as Peter himself, travelled far and wide across Europe securing new military knowledge and technology as well as cementing alliances against the Ottoman Empire. When it came to Peter the Great's foreign policy, his main focus was on securing access to the Baltic Sea - however the Baltic coast was controlled by the Swedish Empire ultimately resulting in the Great Northern War. The Great Northern War lasted between 1700 to 1721 resulting in a victory for the Tsardom of Russia and its Anti-Swedish coalition. This victory not only cemented Russia as a new power in Europe but also led to the decline of the Swedish Empire and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth respectively. During the Great Northern War, Peter founded the city of Saint Petersburg which ultimately became the capital city of the Tsardom of Russia.

Despite still wishing to reform Russia into a modern state, there were many who opposed his reforms. One such opponent being Peter the Great's own son and heir Alexei Petrovich the Tsarevich of Russia. Alexei grew up to hate his father as a result of being raised by reactionary boyars and priests. As a result the Tsarevich sought to revert his father's reforms and bring Russia back to its isolationist and traditionalist ways. Ultimately this did not end well for Alexei was condemned to death for conspiring a rebellion against his father in 1718.

Undeniably, Peter the Great's legacy is significantly important as well as being complex and controversial. Peter's reign took Russia from being a medieval state to a european power that no one could ignore. These foundations laid by Peter allowed Russia to rise to the status of a great power in place of Sweden. Furthermore, he was responsible for many reforms that modernised Russia's system of government. However, it wasn't just the system of government that reformed but also society, religion and warfare. Despite his controversial actions surrounding the treatment of Tsarevich Alexei Petrovich, the legacy of Peter the Great endures as one of the most significant figures in Russian History
