Try not to make long gradient, use lines in different directions and dots
Shading is a very complex process... It's all a matter of picking colors in the palette of your main colors, and knowing how to put them so they'll make the desired effect...
I'd suggest you, if you want tips, to look at skins that have the effect you'd like to reproduce, then try to copy it on your own. With practice, you become familiar with the trick.

-if you're gonna shade, do it for each part
-don't shade every single pixel
