Inuit children are warned not to go near the water's edge alone, or the Qalupalik will steal them away. The Qalupalik has greenish skin, long hair and long nails, and it wears an amauti--a traditional garment worn by Inuit mothers with an enlarged back for carrying their babies. Some people say the Qalupalik raises the stolen Inuit child as its own, while others believe it steals the child's youth, growing younger as the child grows older.
