This poor fellow was stuck underground for so long, that upon finally finding his way through winding tunnels to the overworld, the light shone on him and a chemical reaction occurred to turn him partially to stone. Now he is cursed to roam the underground forever, lest he be turned to stone completely.

oh man i love that game so much, i have like 40 hours in it and still haven't beat it. but yeah, that was the general concept, kinda like the norse myths of dwarves and giants that can't enter Asgard while the sun shines.
