Khazad Dúm was the largest and most impressive dwarven city in Middle Earth, built underneath the Misty Mountains. It stretched from the Mirrormere in the east to Eregion in the west. When it was inhabited it was one of the largest and richest places in Middle Earth, as it was dug under one of the few area's where Mithril was to be found, which created great wealth for the dwarves living there. But in their greed and search for more mithril they mined too deep, and awoke a terrible being from its slumber... a Balrog. Within a year it managed to kill both the king Durin VI and his son, causing the dwarves to flee the city.
For nearly a thousand years the city was abandoned, destroyed and ravaged by orcs and the Balrog, now known as Durins Bane. It would be colonized once again by dwarves led by Balin, but this expedition failed when they were all killed by the orcs hiding there. It was again visited by the fellowship of the Ring, where Gandalf fought of the Balrog only to fall into a deep shaft.

I am building this project on a server using the Lord of the Rings mod, I hope to create my own interpetation of Khazad Dúm. As it is absolutely massive it is currently nowhere near done, but a few key locations are there already, like:

• The Mirrormere and the East Gate
• The First Hall
• the Bridge of Khazad Dúm and the deep shaft underneath it
• the Second Hall
• The Crumbling stairs as seen in the first movie

Apart from these there are also tons of other halls, mines, caverns, and dwellings to be explored. I am starting to build in the eastern part of the city and moving westward, but this may change in the future.
