Episode 1: Contact
Episode 1: Contact
In the year 2048, the Earth died. A fleet of nearly a thousand star ships took 83 million survivors deep into the cosmos to find a new home. Ten years prior to the cataclysm, a weak signal was disovered broadcasting at small intervals from across the galaxy. At the time of the discovery the technology could not determine the origins and the details were filed away, passed off as a rebound signal from a stray satellite.
When the fleet had no choice but to leave the Milky Way, the signal became stronger and more frequencies in the message were found and considered alien. The Linguistics in the science division gave a 75% probability the signal was benevolent and meant to be discovered by Earth. The signal was later pinpointed to galaxy NGC 1300.
Captain Dharma volunteered to take the only ship fitted with the yet unused Omni - Curve Drive technology, and find the origins of the signal. Bending space and time to navigate the universe was bound to take its toll on Dharma's ship. He knew deep down that this was probably going to be a one way trip, but if he found what he was hoping for, then just maybe…
Dharma finished diagnostics to find the main engine cooler was damaged. His ship had made its last voyage. He recorded his last log entry before activating his transmission back to the fleet. As Earth communication technology was still fairly primitive, Dharma calculated the fleet wouldn't receive his message for another 6 years if at all.
He prepared the life pod and shut down the sub-engines. Getting in the space suit wasn't as easy as he remembered from his training, but at least it fit. The suit had 8 days of oxygen and he could probably survive in the life pod for a couple of years, but was hoping he wouldn't need it.
He set the pods auto-pilot to land on the small rocky planet as close to the beacon as he could. The journey to the surface was far from comfortable, but the landing was surprisingly smooth. The pods sensor told him the beacon was in walking distance to the west.
As soon as the pod hatch hissed open, the beacon came into sight. After clumsily climbing down to the surface he began towards the beacon. The sight of the tall, yellow, metallic structure gave him hope. This structure sent a complex message from one end of the known galaxy to the other. If these beings still exist, they are far more advanced than humans.
Dharma caught movement in his peripheral vision and slowly began to look in its direction. He hadn't felt this level of equal fear and excitement in his whole life. He was no longer alone. He had made contact!
