Deoksugung Palace temporarily used 卽祚 Hall as the main gate, without a three-door form, and temporarily used 殿 Hall as the main gate before building the Chinese 殿, the main 殿.

In 1897 (the 1st year of Gwangmu), King Gojong called Myeongrye 宮 back to his old name Gyeongun Palace (慶運宮 Palace), and in 1902 (the 6th year of Gwangmu), the palace was greatly rebuilt and the court was established as a legal 殿 (the royal court where the king was honored on the day of the celebration of the Baekgwan).

Shortly thereafter, 建極 Gate was built at the site of Inhawmun, and Daean Gate, the predecessor of Daehan Gate, was built in the east in front of Cho Won Gate, making it a new main gate.

In 1904 (Gwangmu 8), when a fire in Hamnyeongjeon (咸寧殿) burned down almost all the buildings in Daenae (the palace where the king lives), it was rebuilt from 1904 to 1906 (Gwangmu 10), and the name was changed to Daehanmun (Daehanmun Gate) when the alternative gate was repaired in April 1906. During the renovation, Dancheong was decorated with double eaves, and Yangseong (兩 fortress) was placed on the roof floor, and 鷲 statue was placed on it. The signboard was written by Nam Jeong-cheol (廷哲 Nam 雜) instead of the palace at the time.

In 1914, due to the construction of the road, all the buildings and fences on the right side of the gate were greatly destroyed by the Japanese colonial rule, and Daehanmun Gate was also moved inside the palace at this time. It was also moved back to the city plan in 1970, and continues to this day.

In front of the door, there were stairs with stone animals arranged, and it was dignified as the main gate of the palace, but now the stairs and the base are buried in the asphalt, and only stone animals are exposed on the ground.
