The Dark Age wasn't a sudden downfall but rather a slow fading, a gradual but inevitable shift from the world that had once been. Starting all the way back in spring 2021, the server began to feel the effects of both changing circumstances and the natural ebb and flow of a digital community.
The lifting of COVID restrictions became the most impactful, external factor. A return to face-to-face interactions, a shift that had long been expected, signaled the end of an era. The hours spent building the world block by block, the drama that spanned weeks, and the shared experiences that had once bound players together seemed to fade into the background. The delay of The Ruination update was a clear marker of this change, a sign that the spark that had once driven the server was no longer there. People moved on, distracted by summer, AP Gov/Macro, college applications, and the demands of real-life responsibilities. Even the burst of activity surrounding the SLHS Orchestra Spring concert etiquette video was more of just a fleeting distraction.
As the 2021 fall semester rolled around, a brief resurgence of new players brought a glimpse of activity. Yet, this burst of energy was ultimately short-lived, much like terminal lucidity before the inevitable decline. By summer 2022, the server was left to gather dust, much like a forgotten artifact. College started, and the Discord became quiet, save for the occasional voice chat session. The server was effectively abandoned, left frozen in time despite the reset that had ironically occurred weeks prior.
This wasn’t particularly a bad thing, it had simply run its course. The server, like all things, had experienced its peak, a time when we were all stuck at home during the pandemic, coming together in the digital space to create and connect. But as the real world began to reopen, the passion and time to dedicate to the server faded. What remained was a complicated memory of a time where the bonds we formed and the world we built held meaning in a unique way. The memories were complicated, projects left unfinished, friendships that faded. It wasn’t an end marked by grief, but by a mixture of emotions that lingered alongside the weight of what could have been. The era had been fully lived, and though its conclusion left us with a sense of longing, it also left us grateful for the experiences and connections that defined it. I have a small SMP that anyone interested could join. It started out as a small singleplayer world I played in during the beginning of the pandemic but then evolved into something greater.
The aim is to just have fun and develop the community although there is apparently a "lore" that some other players started roleplaying in so there's that haha
Some images:
Here's our spawn in the community and a bit of some player settlements as of a few days ago (it seems daunting I know, but there's plenty of room to build and develop your own things)

Here are some of the players on our expedition a couple of days ago into a new dimension we opened for anarchy/war/resources (that way players have a place to release their griefing inhibitions and just go wild for a bit)

More info (comment if you want to join):
It's a minehut server but generally isn't very laggy because we have rules in place for that. Speaking of rules, we have a couple of them but they were all decided by the people of the server and the rules mostly serve as a social contract. Although they may seem dauting at first, our staff members are lenient about the rules as long as you go by them too.
We have a pretty fair system too in which players can openly discuss/debate things or give their own opinions without some admin shutting them down because "my server, my rules". A lot of our rules were actually altered due to player input later on.
The rules and all further information can be found on our discord, which I will provide privately if you want to join (we have a whitelist).
Speaking of which, if you want to join our server, comment below and I'll dm you some more info including the discord link!
