If you know how to set it up, find your public IP Address, have enough RAM, and good internet connection, I personally think a dedicated server hosted on your own is the way to go.

The only hard parts are the Port Forwarding, and deciding how much RAM you should dedicate to the server.

Setting up Modded servers (forge or fabric server .jar files) aren't too different, and Spigot has an easy to find tutorial on their website if you can't figure the extra steps out.

The point of the server hosters are to make it easier for you. Personal server hosting isn't actually that hard, it just requires some time and understanding.

I actually set up servers all of the time just for fun (I for some reason prefer to play on a dedicated server instead of an integrated server (a Singleplayer world), even if I'm not playing with anyone), and I actually have a different server I host with one of my friends whenever we want to just have some fun building on a little creative world we have.

Indeed Aternos sucks because cannot upload own plugins etc. It is free though.
plenty other free hosts but if you want real control, gonna have to whip out ya dollas.
I have spent £1000s on Bisect Hosting servers over 5 years. Tried a few other hosts
before that, they sucked in comparison to Bisect.
20GB server costing me just £30 a month atm. (30% for life discount)
You can also try some extremely cheap shared network hosts. Many servers

on same IP just different ports? Usually thier FTP is dire slow and they only

allocate memory when you need it, The time it takes for them to apply that

needed memory is often dire. 10s + Pay for 10 GB ram constantly struggling

to get allocated anything near 1/4 of that. So beware shared networks.

Still great for testing plugins or fixing bugs on the side of your main server.
If you do get a paid host make sure they give you all the ram you pay for and

not a fixed low amount that increases when/if you need it.

The best hosting sites are the paid ones pretty obviously.
Everyone be going for aternos because its for free (meanwhile my 1.13 vanilla server died when hosted by aternos)

Just because its free doesnt mean its the best.
Its like saying a minecraft ripoff is better than minecraft solely because its free
