Recently, I saw this awesome video by SimplySarc where he talked about how he thought you should keep recovery compasses when you die. Hmm... yes, I agree

With this beautiful™ pack, you will now retain recovery compasses on death! I just thought that SimplySarc made a good argument as to why this should be a thing, so I decided that I would add it myself. Hope you agreed with his logic too and enjoy another mini-pack from me! Happy packing, everyone!

2.0.0 Update

well, guys, I know it's been a while! I'm sorry; I've kind of been taking a PMC break. I'm back, now, though, and will be updating every single pack! Starting with you, Persistent Recovery Compasses!

Changes in 2.0.0

  • Every single line of code has been replaced to update it to the 1.20 version! There should be better multiplayer compatibility and it should perform better on lower-end PCs now!

I think the reason why Mojang decided to make the Recovery Compass drop only on dead was to "balance" things, having already something that keeps your inventory because it avoids death is already good on it's own and very Overpowered. Just like they did with the "Notch" Apple or Enchanted Golden Apple, back then, it was the most broken thing in Minecraft, you eat one and you're literally invincible. Not now though. I think what Mojang thinks is that players will reach a point where they get a really good gear, being iron enchanted armor or diamond armor, and expect you to get the Totem of Undying when you're well equipped. With that gear, you don't take much damage from Vindicators, and the bite entity thing summoned by the Evoker is easily avoidable if you don't just gather a bunch of vindicators. The Evoker alone is pretty easy to beat with the mentioned gear, Vexes can be annoying, but just like a wasp, they are not a threat. So following that, they have the expectation or point of view that the player has this totem already because, let's admit it, Woodland Mansion now is easier compared to the Dark City because of the Warden. Vindicators alone do a lot of damage but with the appropriate gear their damage can be treated. The Warden on the other hand does massive damage even with Netherite Protection 4 on. Assuming that you've made it to the Woodland Mansion and got a Totem that means that even if the Warden kills you, you will survive if you're smart enough to get away from the Warden. With that you then get another powerful item which is the compass.

I believe this is their point of view, I might be wrong, but it's what I believe it should be expected. That may be the reason why Mojang decided to make the Recovery Compass an only drop item on death. But, it's a snapshot so who knows if that changes in the future.

The point of a datapack is to add something you want, not to conform specifically to what Mojang wants. If that were the case, OP loot datapacks wouldn't exist

I'm not debating the meaning of Datapack's existence, I'm talking about why the Recovery Compass is not what what the video and you say it was supposed to work a Recovery Compass

I was saying the reason that might be why Mojang did not make the Recovery Compass work as intended like in this datapack does. I never said anything about Datapacks being meaningless. I'm a datapack creator myself too. I neither intended to say that this datapck should not exist for the reasons of why Mojang didn't make it this way as we wanted. I'm only saying what they might have thought or expected, nothing else.

Well yes, I know that Mojang likely wouldn't make you retain them on death. I never said that I didn't think that, I just added it cuz I liked it
