This pack is no longer being updated! Thank you!

Based on the Neo-Beta data pack by SkyDeckAGoGo
    , go check it out!

Modern Beta -- Create Beta-like worlds with modern biomes!

This terrain generation data pack emulates classic terrain generation from the Minecraft Beta days and combines it with the biomes and oceans of modern Minecraft, for those who want an improved vanilla-style experience!

All structures, ores, etc. generate! Survival-complete!

More screenshots, using the Golden Days and Classic Skies resource packs: Album

This data pack is still in active development. Terrain gen may change as more Custom Worlds features are added or due to feedback. Please note that classic seeds like Glacier or gargamel may not generate as you remember them; this was a compromise made to accommodate decently sized oceans (~50% of terrain is water).

    Features:

    Classic and expansive beach generation

Beaches as they were in pre-Beta 1.8 return as both a terrain feature and oceanside biomes!

Modern Beta [1.16.5] -- Create Beta-like worlds with modern biomes! Minecraft Data Pack

Uniform Height Variation Across Most Biomes

Terrain is no longer restricted to set heights for most biomes. Find awesome mountains and cliffs around every corner!

Modern Beta [1.16.5] -- Create Beta-like worlds with modern biomes! Minecraft Data Pack

    All Main Biomes Included

Most biomes from vanilla Minecraft are included, with humidity/temperature-based distribution modeled after pre-Beta 1.8 distribution. You shouldn't expect to see a snowy taiga next to a desert and can hope to see inviting warm waters around jungles!

Biomes removed in Beta 1.8 return as well! Look for shrublands, rainforests, and more!

Modern Beta [1.16.5] -- Create Beta-like worlds with modern biomes! Minecraft Data Pack

    All Structures Included

All structures generate as they do in vanilla Minecraft, including ocean monuments, pillager outposts, villages, and strongholds!

To change the seed for terrain and biome generation, open Modern Beta/data/minecraft/dimension/overworld.json and update the two "seed" fields to your desired numeric seed! I recommend providing the same seed in-game as well to provide a consistent experience, as it appears structure (villages, strongholds etc.) and feature (beaches, trees, caves, etc.) placement uses the in-game seed, random or not. Use this site to convert text seeds into the numeric format.

    Installation:
    1. Download the .zip file and extract the folders.
    2. (Optional) Edit the overworld.json file as described above with your seed.
    3. In Minecraft, enter the Create a New World screen and select Data Packs.
    4. Drag Modern Beta into the game window and move it into 'Selected'. The data pack should be ordered above the Default data pack.
    5. (Optional) If using BAC Advancements, drag Modern Beta BAC Compatibility into the game window and move it into 'Selected'. The data pack should be ordered above the BAC data pack.
    6. Create the world!

    Known Issues:

    • Currently, Custom World data pack inter-compatibility is quite poor, and you should expect issues if you use Modern Beta with any other overworld-modifying data pack or plugin. This data pack does not modify the Nether nor the End in any way so there shouldn't be issues there.
    • Modern Beta has been tested to work as expected on vanilla and fresh Spigot servers, but I can make no guarantees with compatibility with other server software or plugins (see above).
    • In the uncommon event that terrain extends above y=127, only stone will generate above that height instead of the expected grass/dirt. (MC-187716) (Temporary fix added in v1.6)
NOTE: Custom worlds/dimensions are still experimental and may be unstable and prone to issues.

    To-Do:

    • Re-implement one or more of the mountain biomes. On the fence about this one, maybe if 1.17 brings significant changes to them and if I can make them fairly distinct.

    Feedback and comments welcome!

Feel free to work off of this pack but please credit me! If you wish to repackage the data pack in a modpack, please ask first. Please do not redistribute the data pack alone as-is, I would prefer if you just linked back here!

    This...
    Is...
    PERFECT!

Honestly, the style and overall feel of pre-adventure terrain was so much more enchanted feeling, and adding the new biomes and other naturally occuring features completely changes the feel of minecraft, without making the terrain feel moddy or not vanilla-ey.

Is there any chance this will be updated any time soon? I'd love to include this on my private server!

And now I wonder why Mojang didn't keep this kind of world generation.

Seriously, this makes Minecraft worlds feel "magical" again.

The 'Beta' dimension is if you want to use the datapack alongside the vanilla or some other overworld. To access either that or the Sky dimension, you need to use commands, yes.

I'm curious, how did you replicate/ or port the beta 1.8 world gen to modern Minecraft?

I simply allow more height variation for most biomes.

hey, is there a way I can use this on a realm? i originally used the fabric mod and generated a bunch of chunks and used that as the new realm world, but it appears corruption occurred shortly after as buildings disappeared and lighting was permanently bugged in some places. i decided to use the data pack version but any new chunks i generate in the world on are vanilla.
