Mojang promised us fireflies during the 2021 Minecraft Live event. However, after learning that fireflies were toxic to frogs, (frogs were originally going to eat them) they were scrapped and never added into the game. I have since taken it upon myself to recreate our beloved two-pixel friend using nothing but the magic of commands and datapacks. And after a slight delay in release, here it finally is!
[|||][|||] The Fireflies Datapack [|||][|||]
This datapack will add fireflies into your world that spawn around nighttime and add ambience to your world. They fly around happily adding life and excitement as you explore during the night. You can sit there and take in the beauty of these flashing creatures or you can take on the challenge to try to bottle one up. The fireflies emit light either when they're flying around or if they're on the ground in a bottle. If you have one bottled up, you can right click it to release it back into the wild. Or you can keep it in your inventory as a pet. Your choice!
This datapack also adds in Rainbow Fireflies. Each firefly that spawns in has a 1 in 128 chance (0.78125%) to become a rainbow firefly. Rainbow fireflies flash faster and shine brighter. You can bottle one up in the same way and release it as you please.
Fireflies will despawn after 5 minutes and if there are no players around within 48 blocks. Rainbow fireflies take a bit longer to despawn; and will despawn in 10 minutes. This will give you a better chance of finding one if it appears. Fireflies that are released from bottles do not despawn naturally.
WARNING: If a firefly flies into water, it will die!
Let me know what you all think of this datapack. I had a lot of fun making it and I hope everyone likes it! I will be updating this datapack from time to time if any bugs arise or to add any features that I think of. I'll also update the datapack when future versions release to make it compatible with them. Enjoy the fireflies!
Developer's Note: This datapack has not been tested with multiplayer, so problems may exist there. I apologize if there are, but I will try to fix them if they come up.

- Developer's Note:
The only thing is that when I tried it on my smp, TPS went to 10 and stayed there, and as soon as I removed it and reloaded, server was back to normal. Server does not have "the best hardware", in fact it is not very good at all, but good enough to run a stable 20 tps server. Still lags it out as soon as night falls with this datapack. Maybe adjust amount of them?This datapack has not been tested with multiplayer, so problems may
exist there. I apologize if there are, but I will try to fix them if
they come up.
