This datapack will add weather to deserts. While in a desert when it is raining or thundering in the world, the player will see and hear the effects of a sandstorm. Because this uses predicates to detect biomes, this will only work in 1.15+. It may be possible to make this work in 1.13/1.14 if anyone is interested.

Features:
  • Works with the world's normal weather cycles.
  • "Rain" weather will cause sand particles to appear and wind noise to pick up
  • "Thunder" weather will cause louder wind and limit visibility.
  • Walking "indoors" will cancel the effect (as long as there are blocks above the head).

I am still working on the following:
  • Currently only works in desert biome variants, but this can be expanded to mesa fairly easily (might add an option to do mesa storms as well... using red sand instead?).
  • I would like the sand particles to go slightly sideways instead of downward.
  • Blindness is nice for cutting visibility, but there needs to be a way to adjust it as currently blindness has no value (maybe in 1.17?)
  • Would like better "indoor" detection.

If anyone sees issues or has ideas to fix some of the issues, please let me know. I will keep working on it and try to incorporate the things I am working on and post updates. This should also work on multiplayer worlds, but if it does not, please let me know!

Haven't played in a while, so I don't know. But as far as I know, I am not using any commands that shouldn't. You can try it and see, just make sure to back up your saves before you try something that hasn't been tested like this!

Please update this pack! It's a great concept. I actually have something like this but for the Nether in my pack, so I really like this too.

It wouldn't be too hard to add the visibility issues and such on oceans, but i believe rain and thunderstorms happen while in the ocean biome. I'll have to boot up the game to be sure, but I think it does...
