After Ebonysong’s father died, she didn’t see the point in anything.

Sootstalk died of greencough just as Leafbare ended. Batclaw told them the news one morning. Ebonysong’s family ran into the medicne den or denined the truth. But Ebonysong just stood there, empty with grief.
The clan held Sootstalk’s vigil that night. Ebonysong’s clanmates spoke of how of a great cat and father he was. When it was Ebonysong’s turn to speak, she said that her father was the most important cat to her.
Ever.

For many days, Ebonysong hid in her den, shaken with grief, refusing to attend patrols. Cats stopped taking interest in her. That was fine with her. She didn’t need them.

One day, Ebonysong’s apprentice, and her sister’s daughter, Beepaw, came to her. Ebonysong barely noticed Beepaw in the past couple days, being wrapped up in her tail.
She said to Ebonysong:
”Ebonysong, are you okay? I need you.”
Ebonysong looked at Beepaw with big eyes. It all clicked. She’d had her time grieving, even though her heart would always be empty.
She’d have to make through it.
Ebonysong started attending patrols and getting back to clan life. Even though it was possible that she would never find love, that would be okay.

Because at the end of the day, Beepaw made it all worth it.
