Section: The jungle
14th of May, 1851
Despite my previous writings, I fully believe today to be the hottest day thus far. The thick canopies are behind me now, and the jungle sun is taking full use of that opportunity. I never thought I’d miss the oven of tall trees, but now the thought of all that shade seems to make the amount of sweat dripping off my face multiply. Nature, however, I do not believe is the cause of this baleful thinning; The only area where the vegetation is less accompanies the pieces of ruins I'm finding, as if there was once a clearing that has since become reclaimed by the jungle. The smaller ruins I found two days ago appear to have been an outer structure, as I've found larger pathways and structures throughout my journey so far these past few days. While the outer ruins were short and scattered, like broken walls, these others seem grander, more complete. Just now, I found what remains of a stone structure that was far more intricate than the others. While most of it had collapsed, one section of walls still stood. The bottom and tops of the walls were carved with ornate patterns since worn down by time, and the main surface of the wall showed hints of having once been painted with yellows and reds. This is the most fascinating to me so far, this proves that to some extent, whoever built these structures had some form of art.
After some quick rest, I may have realized something. My previous estimate as to the age of these structures was somewhere in line with the ruins of Mesoamerica, at several thousand years old. I have traveled and seen those ruins, which were in fact very old. However, these seem much much older, as if the word ancient was created, and waiting to be properly used until the discovery of these structures. I cannot make a certain estimate, but I can guess that these ruins are at least tens of thousands of years old, pre-dating any known human civilization with this level of complexity. The ruins are getting more abundant, as if I'm getting closer to the heart of it all. Maybe within a few days I will have found it, and be closer to understanding this mystery.
