Scattered here and there around the overworld are islands of terrain that are infected by fungi. Enormous mushrooms, Mainly Magna Laminia and Bulbus Ingensi grow from the ground like trees, and in the place of grass is a sprawling gray Mycelium (Mycelium Phaulia). Animal Life is even stranger, with the only representing organism being the Mooshroom, or Bos Fungus.
It is now known that enormous fungi were quite common in the overworld’s deep past. The fossils of the extinct Prototaxites Loganii are clear evidence for this. P. Loganii lived 420 Million years ago, long before land plants had become common. It was eight blocks tall, without a cap or bulb, and it stretched its thin white roots into the soil for many tens of blocks, treating the soil with chemicals and collecting nutrients. The chemicals it added to the soil have remained ever since, recycled by millions of generations of plants which couldn’t survive without them. It was these plants that eventually brought the decline of giant fungi. Small shrubs evolved into mighty trees, and with their ability of photosynthesis which granted them endless energy, plants invaded the land, making fungi mere scavengers in their wake. On some isolated islands, the ancient fungi used different chemicals to digest the soil, chemicals poisonous to plants. On these islands, plants never took root, and the giant mushrooms live on.
Mooshrooms, in comparison with their home biomes, are very young, 2 Million years at oldest. Likely, a herd of cows was swept out to sea in a storm, and washed up on one of these strange islands. Unlike all other known animals, a cow’s advanced three chambered stomach can digest Mycelium, and the islands complete lack of predators allowed them to multiply on that island. Slowly they developed many fungal features, and a symbiotic relationship between cow and fungus emerged. The mushrooms were given transportation to spread their spores anywhere on the island, and the cows were given a more nutritious milk that resembles mushroom stew. The mushroom infused milk is packed with nutrients, mainly vitamin B12 and Selenium. Together, these nutrients prevent many health problems, including circulatory diseases, neural impairments, heart failure, cancer, macular degeneration and arthritis. This improved the health and life expectancy of mooshroom calves, allowing the species to proliferate further. Once humans visited the island, they spread the Mooshrooms to many other mushroom islands where they have thrived and become an iconic symbol of these strange corners of our world.

Credit | The real ancient fungus P. Loganii which inspired this blog. The downfall of the giant fungi was true, except we know of no enormous survivors. |
