CHAPTER SEVEN

“Wait- what object? An asteroid?” My mind automatically went to the worst possible situation.

“No. I believe it is the ISS shuttle they are sending to us, Fae.” He said.

“The shuttle?? Finally!” I heaved a sigh, feeling relieved as there was a high chance that DNA was right. It was a nice feeling- heck, it was a wonderful feeling to know that finally we would be able to get out of this.

We waited about another hour, I estimated. I knew I could ask DNA about time but that was the least of my concerns. I kept looking to see if the shuttle was nearby.. Or anyone at all. My heart raced as it drew closer to two hours. DNA was in my arms, however I could tell he was continuing his scams on the area around us and on myself. At least he had something else to scan and not me every 5 seconds! Unless you watch his visor, you can’t tell what he does unless you go into his system and then all the way into his coding log and read everything that’s going on in.. let’s just say it’s a process to see what he thinks about and does.

“The shuttle, at its current rate, should be here in 10 minutes or less.” He stated.

“That’s good news, not sure how long this suit lasts in exact terms.” I shrugged.

“I can not calculate it unfortunately. Apologies, Fae.”

“Not a problem. I’m gonna grab your charger in case we have to abandon this shuttle.”

I floated over to the locker where I had first found DNA. I grabbed his charger, in which it seemed he had already unplugged since it wasn’t worth keeping it plugged in anyways. I held it, admiring it for just a moment before going back over to DNA, floating aimlessly around.

“Doing good over there, buddy?” I laughed, it was quite funny to see him floating.

“Yes. I would like it if you could stop this constant motion though. It is making my scans somewhat inaccurate.”
“Alright then.” I grabbed him, holding him lightly in my arm.

Soon enough, I saw a decently large, white object coming towards us out one of the porthole windows. I hoped this was the ISS shuttle, oh please let it be the ISS shuttle. The black box started to come on in static, however Casimir was not the one speaking through it.

“Hello! Is anyone there? This is the ISS shuttle nearby.”

“Yes! Me and my robot are inside.” I said, louder than normal so they could hear me.

“We are going to remove the air tight door and then get you. A person will be there waiting, so get ready within a couple of moments.”

“Got it.”
I waited, gripping DNA in my arm. He clutched my wrist, seemingly trying to hold onto me. The white metal door on the left wall was abruptly ripped off by someone, assisted by the ship’s robotic claw-arm. I waved to the person, they did the same and then grabbed the back of my suit, attaching a cable to it. The person tugged on it briefly and then gestured for me to follow. I kicked off the wall, exiting through the opening.
Once out, I looked down. In all honesty, it gave me a brief moment of a light-headed feeling thinking about the endless void that was below me. However, it was a sight to remember with the shades of orange, blue, purple and practically any other warm color there was. The person took me inside the ISS shuttle as the airlock chamber closed. The person gave a thumbs up to the person sitting at a control panel. We strapped ourselves into the seats near the back as I realized there were 2 other people in the shuttle. Someone abruptly removed my helmet, standing in front of me.

“Hey there! My name’s Cyrus.” Someone said, I could tell they were a male by their voice.

“Oh- uh. Hi, my name’s Fae: Faelyn Scottin.” I waved, my heart still pounding.

“Are you okay? You look a bit pale.” He said, tipping his head to the side.

“Oh uh, a little light-headed but otherwise I’m overjoyed.” I said, deeply sighing.

“Gotcha. Bet you’re glad to get out of that?” Cyrus chuckled, gesturing to the capsule.

“Yes. Very much.” I nodded.

“I heard you did cryostat, yeah?” He said, starting to grab a few things attached to the wall.

“Yeah, 11 days of it.” I shrugged.

“Wow, I tried it once. But I was a test subject, so I only did it for 34 hours.” He said. “Now, out of curiosity, what is that?” He asked, gesturing to DNA.

“Ahh.. this is my robot, DNA.” DNA waved to Cyrus.

“Well, hello there then.” He smiled briefly.

As Cyrus gathered a few other things, I waited silently unsure what else to do. Cyrus had icy blue eyes, black hair and was wearing a plain white shirt. A few moments later, he drifted back over to me and looked down at DNA, seemingly thinking about something.

“Do you require assistance, Cyrus?” DNA perked up, tipping his head.

“Oh- well uh.. Not sure really. I’m just trying to take her blood pressure.”

“Her blood pressure is currently above average and heart rate is elevated. This could be due to stress and/or worry.” Cyrus arched an eyebrow once he said this, DNA now displayed a thumbs up.

“He has medical programs..” I shrugged, nervously smiling.

“Oh! No no, I think it’s fascinating how someone was able to do this without him physically doing something, It’s like he just has the answer right then and there.”

“In simple terms without me explaining 9 years of research and technology development, it’s a scan he does which can go 180 degrees without him turning his head.”

“Wait wait wait, you made this?” Cyrus looked up and down at me and DNA.

“Uh-huh.” I nodded. “He’s more of a friend than a robot.”

“Cool..” He mused. “Anyways! We’ll be back at the ISS soon.”

“Who are these other people?” I looked around, gesturing to the few others in the shuttle.

“Oh! Sorry. The pilot over there controlling the ship is Ash also known as Ashley. That’s Robin over there and behind you is Collin.” He explained, pointing to each person. They all waved once Cyrus said who they were. I looked behind me, seeing Collin and jumped.

“Sorry to scare you! Cyrus raving about your robot got my interest.”

“Oh, you can look at him. He doesn’t bite. Literally, he doesn’t have a defense mechanism.”

“Alright, thanks.” Collin chuckled, coming to hover by Cyrus.

The two stared at DNA, asking him.. Quite a few questions. He answered all of them, probably more than what they were expecting, however he didn’t understand any ‘sayings’ or slang. They would explain what it meant and his visor momentarily blinked green, meaning he was saving the explanation in case someone asked him in the future. Made me really wonder what other things he had saved in there..

We eventually started to come in front of a massive shuttle, which was instantly recognized to be the ISS. The shuttle hooked onto one part of the ship, I couldn’t figure out how but I pushed that curiosity aside. I unstrapped myself, holding DNA and followed Cyrus to the back of the shuttle where we went through the door I had come in from in the first place. It opened and led to an airlock chamber, which we went through to get inside the ISS. I looked around, just merely admiring it. Every childish instinct in me wanted to go explore every inch of this; it was practically my childhood fulfilled in one mere moment.

“Follow me, we should probably contact the control team to let them know we successfully got you.” Cyrus waved at me, wanting me to follow him down the hallways of the ship.

“Okay.” I nodded vigorously, one half of me was excited to talk to my Dad, since he was probably still there, and the other half of me was overly excited to go around the spacecraft.

I followed Cyrus to a large control room, in which Ash already was along with another person who hadn’t been on the shuttle before. Cyrus tapped Ash on the shoulder, she looked at him and handed him something that looked similar to the black box I had in the capsule.

“Casimir? Ya’ there?” Cyrus turned the dials as he spoke into it.

“Yes, Cyrus. What’s the news?” Casimir responded, I was hovering behind him.

“We successfully retrieved Fae and we’re back. No severe injuries that are visible.” Cyrus grinned to himself.

“Good work. Thank you.” He replied.

I thought momentarily about saying something but I decided to stay quiet as the two talked for another short minute, then turned the black box off.

“Hey, I learned a bit about you before we came and I heard you were coming beforehand to do research with us?” Cyrus turned to me, giving me a quizzical expression.

“Oh yeah, I’m here for things more toward mineral testing, plant growth, you know.” I shrugged.

“Awesome! You will be working with Robin a LOT then. Want me to introduce you to her?”

“Sure, but I have a question for you before we do.” An idea came to mind as we spoke.

“Yeah?”

“What’s your role here?”
“Oh, me? I am mostly an exploration guy, mission abortion team, ship maintenance and medical-related accidents.” He grinned.

“You must be busy then.” I laughed, nervously reaching for the back of my neck.

“Yep! Anyways, let's go meet Robin.”

Cyrus dashed off, trailing down more hallways of the station. We would occasionally lightly kick off the wall to continue moving. The doors opened automatically, which honestly surprised me at first. I could tell DNA, idly gripping to my shoulder, that he was scanning quite a few things. I looked at him and smiled, allowing him to continue.. Whatever he was doing. We eventually entered a room which still had white metal walls, but seemed to have an airlock leading to the room.

“You probably are going to feel really light-headed in just a second so hang on.” He gave me a thumbs up as we walked in the room.

Just as he said, it felt like pressure pushing down on me. The dizziness only lasted for a moment, Cyrus seemed to be fine but that was probably because he had been in here a lot. I looked around after a moment, realizing why it felt this way; there were gravity forces used in this room.

“Woah..” I muttered to myself, looking around at what seemed to be endless rows of glass cases, filled with any type of plant you could imagine; some of which I didn’t recognize. Heat lamps hung over the cases and light was partially dimmed in this room. Over in the corner, was a large L-shaped desk where someone sat, staring at a panel of 3 computers, furiously typing on a keyboard.

“Hey, Robin.” Cyrus walked up to her, tapping her on the shoulder.

“OH! Hey, Cyrus!!” She exclaimed, grinning. “Oh my gosh, who are you?! “ She said, tipping her head. She didn’t seem defensive towards me, yet more on the excited side.

“I’m Fae, hey there.” I waved, smiling.

“OO! Hiii! I’m Robin, I work well.. This area.” She used her arms to gesture to the room.

“Oh nice, I’m probably gonna be working with you a lot so Cyrus said he wanted to introduce me to you.”

“Awesome!! And who is waving to me?!” She said, squatting down to look at DNA, who was, in fact, waving at her.

“I am DNA. A Digital Navigation Android. I was created to serve humans.”

“Aww!! You are SO cute.” She squeaked.

“Well anyways, while you two do.. Whatever you are doing. I’ll be going back to see what Ash is doing. See ya!” Cyrus waved to us, leaving the room.

Me and Robin stayed there, talking for about another half an hour. She was quite friendly and showed me around, telling me what things were, where things were placed and things of that sort. In all honesty, overall she appeared to be a nice person. She brought me over to the desk last and explained to me what she was doing before me and Cyrus came in. She spoke very technically despite her energetic personality, I liked that. We sat there for about 2 hours, which flew by quite quickly. It felt nice to actually be here and do what I was sent here to do in the first place.
