1. Introduction
Hello fellow Datapackers!
As a first episode in my series Datapacking In-Depth I created a list of helpful tools, interesting websites and great communities, that might make your datapacking experience even greater or help you get started. This is the start of a brand new series, where I'll explain various things related to datapacks. I hope you'll enjoy and find something helpful.
2. Generators
Generators, well, generate stuff for you. For quickly creating complicated commands or datapack files, these generators can be helpful:
MCStacker MCStacker allows you to generate complex commands easily with a few clicks. There's basically almost nothing with commands that mcstacker can't do. Get started with MCStacker: 🔗 Homepage |
Minecraft Tools Minecraft Tools is another website with various generators for specific use cases. It let's you generate custom fireworks, banners, mobs, potions, books, signs and much more. It also includes some helpful tools for survival like a coordinate calculator and an enchantment probability calculator. Get started with Minecraft Tools: 🔗 Homepage |
misode's Data Pack Generators Misode created generators for many different things related to datapacks. No matter if it's advancements, recipes or worldgen, this website got you covered. There also are guides on the website that give you further information about creating datapacks. Get started with misode.github.io: 🔗 Homepage 🔗 Generators 🔗 Guides |
thedestruct7i0n's Generators These generators are focussed specifically on crafting recipes and advancement, and they're really good at it. That's pretty much all there is to say... Get started with thedestruct7i0n: 🔗 Homepage 🔗 Advancements 🔗 Recipes (for crafting recipes) |
3. Tutorials and Articles
Tutorials are a great way to start learning. Even if you think you already know most of the stuff, you might discover some new knowledge, so the following articles are definitely worth reading.
The Data Pack Knowledge Book The Data Pack knowledge book is a project consisting of two parts: Function Datapacks for Dummies and Datapacking In-Depth. The series "Function Data Packs for Dummies" by Bertiecrafter provides quite a lot of information and will help you get started with datapacks. It also includes many handy tips and tricks, while Datapacking In-Depth by Kefaku (yes, that's me 😁) will help you link basic concepts together to create more complex functionality with your datapacks. Both include challenges to practice your newly gained knowledge after reading. Get started with The Datapack Knowledge Book: 🔗 Overview 🔗 Function Data Packs for Dummies | Quickstart |
Minecraft Wiki The Minecraft wiki, the source for any minecraft related information, of course also has quite many articles that are helpful for creating datapacks. I just listed a few, there are way more. Get started with Minecraft Wiki: 🔗 Homepage 🔗 Data Pack 🔗 Tutorial: Creating a data pack 🔗 Commands |
4. Communities
Communities are great to talk about your creations, ask questions, learn from each other or compete with others. There are many great communities out there, I just listed my favourite ones.
Datapack Hub This group is another great community, where you can get tips for your datapacks or just talk about random command-related stuff. The group started here on planetminecraft as "Daily Datapackers", later it has been renamed to "Datapack Hub". Get started with Datapack Hub: 🔗 PMC Group Page 🔗 Discord Server |
Datapack Jam This is group regularly hosts Jams where anyone can participate. The challenge is to create datapack for a specific topic in an limited timeframe. Joining one of these jams is a good way to practice creating datapacks and sharing fun quick ideas with others. Get started with Datapack Jam: 🔗 PMC Group Page 🔗 Discord Server |
Minecraft Commands This is probably the biggest community related to coding with minecraft commands and datapacks. No matter what question you have, here you almost certainly will get an answer. Of course you can also just chat about coding or help other people yourself. 👍👎 | How did you like it? Please leave your feedback in the comments. |
If you want to learn even more about datapacks, you can find other episodes of DID and more in the Datapack Knowledge Book.

Anyway, your article should be put somewhere in the datapack section of PMC so new datapackers know how to start.
Now it's featured in there :D
done :D
It already includes Function Data Packs for Dummies for new datapackers. I'm not sure whether a second series would be needed.
regarding the next episodes:
The next few episodes (like, at least the next 6, if I continue this series that long) are going to be more like tutorials and will very likely require some basic knowledge about datapacks. That's why I plan to add a short paragraph at the beginning of those episodes, linking to the minecraft wiki tutorial and your tutorials. Would you be okay with @mention notifications from that or should I just write your name normally.
