After some way to much time I proudly present to you my newest project, the 'SS Langensalza'!
The ship was constructed by the Friedrichswerke in the free-state of Friedrichsburg and finished in 1905. She was the first of the Langensalza-Class, a class of 6 vessels meant to be used as work-horses by the 'Königlich Hannoverscher Seedient' (Royal Hanoveranian Line). Easy to built and cheap to maintain ships that are used on routes with less traffic that are also equiped with big cargo spaces that can be transformed into quarters for steerage passengers.
She was named after the city of Langensalza and in honour to those who fell in the Battle of Langensalza, the last stand of the Hanoveranian Army against the attacking Prussians in the Austro-Prussian War. Her sister ships wear the names of the fallen Hanoveranian NCOs in that battle respectively.
During her use with the Seedienst, she had a quite uneventfull life, beeing used for the routes between Emden and Eastern Canada. She survived WW1 docked in Friedrichsburg Harbour and was allowed to remain with the Seedienst after the war as the biggest ship left in their fleet.
But with bigger ships beeing built her age began to take it's toll, which let her owners make the decision to sell her to another company in 1927 that put a bigger emphasis on cargo and made all the ships passenger spaces to 2nd Class.
However, her new owners were struggling financially and had to cut many costs in operating the ship. And so, after faulty repairs on one of her main boilers water pumps and a clogged water level indicator her port main boiler ran on increasingly dangerous levels of water, until the boiler finally exploded some 50 miles east of New York, ripping the hull wide open.
