Is it just me (probably not) or do people tend to associate certain types of music, albums, or songs with certain periods? Last year, I was into a new band or album every month (list below), so whenever I play, sing, or think about a certain song, memories from that time come back to me.
January - Metallica's first three albums
February - Fear of the Dark, The Book of Souls, The Book of Souls: Live Chapter, and "Still Life" (all Iron Maiden)
March - St. Anger (Metallica)
April - 72 Seasons (Metallica)
May - Hardwired... to Self-Destruct and S&M2 (Metallica)
June - "Breaking the Law" by Judas Priest, "The Dark Ride" by Helloween, and "Crazy Train" by Ozzy Osbourne
July - whatever was playing on the rock and roll channel my dad played on Pandora that month
August - Helloween
September - Avantasia
October - Avantasia
November - Avantasia, especially "The Story Ain't Over"
December - Alestorm
I guarantee you that you could give me a song from one of those albums or bands and I could recall a memory I've linked it to.

I'd say this is common… although it gets to be more years aor groups of years rather than months as one gets older e.g. Afternoon Delight — Starland Vocal Band will be forever linked to the summer of '76
