"It all started with the Forced Regenerative Serum, or the FRS. Little did our scientists know, but its effects caused the fallen soldiers to come back to life and turn into terrifying abominations. I had to put down quite a few of my men due to them trying to cannibalise their fellow soldiers."
–Canderus, Unigryff captain
The undead Staellen are the result of fallen soldiers reanimating through the Forced Regenerative Serum, or FRS for short. Soldiers that were injected with this serum were supposed to have increased regeneration of damaged tissue in combat, reducing the need for medics in the field. The serum did its job as it was supposed to, and numerous field medics were transported back to the Staellen home world of Stael to help treat the ill, since they had better training to most of the doctors on their planet and could help research new techniques of keeping their soldiers alive against the Draconian menace that threatened the Staellen's home.
However, it wasn't until a mortally wounded soldier who had been injected with the FRS came back to life, as if he'd been risen by the Voidfather himself. Many were surprised at this sudden resurrection, and a dropship taking some soldiers to be transported to another outpost took him to be dropped off at one of the Staellen command ships to be examined. The ship never arrived at the rendezvous point, and an away team was sent to search for it. It seemed that the dropship had gotten lost, but what had really happened was much more morbid. The away team found the interior of the craft to be heavily damaged from some sort of unknown creature, with corpses of dead crew-men and -women littering the halls. No sign of the mysteriously-risen man could be found.
After several hours of searching, they finally found some eviscerated corpses of some of the crew, their armour slashed through like it had been tissue paper. Strange gurgling noises came from up ahead as the away team ventured further down the hall.
Contact was lost after a chilling shriek and the sounds of gunfire blasted through comms. It was clear: science was no substitute for a medic. Facilities producing the serum were immediately shut down, and a vaccine was created to suppress the serum's effects. No cure is known.
Identification of the undead is simple enough. Cracked or broken visors on helmets, a foul stench of decay accompanied by gurgling noises, autophagia (eating of one's own body parts), cannibalism, and red life status lights in the place of blue life status lights are all signs that an individual is undead.
If you spot an undead, there is only one thing you can do.
Run.
