Henry Speere woke up alone. This morning was not particularly important, just like any of the other days of his
life. Henry went downstairs, expecting his breakfast to be bland, as usual. It was. Henry looked out the window, miles of the middle city stretching away into the smog. The morning commute to his job at the Department of Enforcement would be uneventful, he firmly believed. He did not know his life would change.

Henry Speere took the elevator to the lobby of his apartment. It was not big or small, but a usual size. He checked out, writing time of departure and probable time of return, careful to give himself some time before curfew in case of trouble. Reaching his dull grey hoverbike, Henry made sure everything was working properly. It wouldn't do to miss a single day of his dull job. It was the same every day, recieve an emergency warning from a lower city police camera, dispatch a team of drones, and watch as the squad ripped apart whatever self-confident gang had triggered the alarm. This day, however, was different.
The first sign was a blackout of two security cameras. If only one had shut down, this could be written off as maintenance, but, since two were broken, something must be amiss. Henry sent two full squads of drones to investigate, but neither of these found anything in the lower city. Once the patrol returned and the cameras were back online Henry felt better. Soon the incident passed out of his mind, but a sense of unease stayed with Henry. This sense kept Henry alive, but just barely.
An explosion rocked the building, and it was only Henry Speere's intuition that saved him. Though not overly athletic, he managed to quickly find the safest place in his room, underneath his shielded desk. His timing was impeccable, and after finding his shelter Henry's floor collapsed. This did not save him, however. The desk collapsed under the weight of the ceiling, crushing most of his body. Henry's survival was mostly by luck, though, to be fair, Henry was oddly hearty.
Returning to consciousness for the second to last time in his life, Henry Speere saw blackness all around him. He felt only pain, and could hardly move. Struggling to get free, he shifted part of the pile of rubble in which he was buried. This perfectly timed movement caught the motion sensors of a search bot. Hearing the quiet motors of the searcher, Henry slipped into welcoming darkness.
Upon his return to the land of the living, Henry Speere felt better. Better than he had before, better than he had in years, better than he had ever felt. Wondering at this, he attempted to get up, only to be held by a network of wires and tubes. Investigating this strange confinement, Henry saw something that shook him to the core. Instead of soft flesh, hard steel and clear titanium were containing his internal organs and skeleton. Horrified by his discovery, Henry broke free and ran, out of the hospital, out of the middle city. This was a turning point in his life.
Henry Speere, now more mechanical than organic, remembered his former position, and set about integrating his mental net into the security system. Gaining control of both the drone forces and the cameras, Henry became the Law, the only remaining police in the lower city. Out to destroy the group that had caused his near death, Henry Speere is now a coldhearted, driven automaton, the only respected power in all of the lower city.
