Visible Barrier
I played around with the particle effects, and I magically got a visible barrier. This would mostly be used for decoration purposes, and to show people where not to go. This is useful because it's a way to have the barrier sign, without holding the barrier block.
How to Build:
1. Place your command block 3 blocks down from where you want the barrier to go. Insert this command into the command block: /particle barrier ~ ~3 ~ 0 0 0 1 1
2. Connect an output from a clock to the command block. The clock should be about the speed of a hopper clock.
3. Cover up the redstone, and it works!

it's also only client sided. if you did it on a server, only you would see them.

misunderstood that
either way the barrier was intended to be able to show up like that
although now i think i might actually be wrong since i just realized i misread the snapshot news
