Pella was the capital city of the ancient Macedonian Empire, as well as Alexander's empire. It was a sizable town, and its population was greatly bolstered by the extraordinary military victories of Philip II, Alexander, and their successors. The city was founded in 399 BC by King Archelaus, and it served as a prosperous political and commercial center for much of the Classical era thereafter.
