St James's Palace, built between 1531 and 1536, served as a major royal palace for Henry VIII and remains only one of two of his great houses to remain mostly intact today (the other being Hampton Court). Built on the site of St James's Leper Hospital it served as the primary London residence of the British Monarch in the transition between the burning of The Palace of Whitehall and Queen Victoria's move to Buckingham Palace. In the early 1800s, Clarence House was built to the side which now serves as the London residence of the Prince of Wales.

St James's Palace still serves as the meeting place of all ambassadors to the UK, the residence of a couple minor royals and the meeting place of the Accession Council who proclaim the death of and new reigning Monarch from Friary's Court. Also as a small tidbit, the first United Nations treaty was signed within its halls.
