A furnace that takes logs and creates charcoal without ever needing to be refueled.

To build this you need:
  • 1 furnace
  • 8 droppers
  • 6 chests
  • 10 hoppers
  • 7 comparators
  • 4 repeaters
  • 3 redstone torches and
  • 2 target blocks
  • (and a bunch of redstone wires and building materials. I didn't count.)

Explanation

This build consists of 3 parts. In designing this I assumed that the logs would come too slow for the furnace to burn them, so the first contraption the logs encounter is a holding chamber. They get stopped in a hopper in which they wait to reach 23 items. Then they are dumped into the furnace all at once to minimize coal efficiency loss. After the furnace they flow into a 50/50 splitter. Half the items flow to the output, half of them get transported back up to the furnace to be burned.

Applications

By hooking this up to a tree farm two of these cells can comfortably fuel a small to medium sized super-smelter (Assuming you can produce enough wood). By using this cell you essentially triple the burn power of you module in normal mode and multiply it by 8 when filled (See Problem No. 1).

Potential Problems

1. Overflow

The furnace only burns 1 coal per 8 char coal produced but back fills with 4. After 768 char-coal consumed (17 hours of operation) the machine will backfill all 6144 items at which point the item elevator from the splitter to the furnace clogs up, leaving you 30208 burn cycles (or 27 days of non-stop operation) to fix the problem by emptying 1 slot in every dropper of the elevator. This can easily be fixed by replacing the elevator-clock for clog-resistant one

2. Inefficiencies

The holding chamber can only see the contents of the holding-hopper to a resolution of 23 Items. The holding chamber guarantees self-sufficiency. If exactly 23 Items fill into the hopper the third cycle will only burn 7 instead of 8 items. If more items fill into the furnace it may miss more cycles.
