I've always wanted to explore how the internet works.
I have read up on the theory of operation, protocols, ISO levels and such.
But if there is one lesson I've learned that has always stuck with me, it's that experiencing something offers far greater understanding than just reading about it.
So I decided what better way to experiment with networks than with a network of sorts that already exists. Minecart networks.
Minecart networks have always fascinated me, and I love seeing the kinds of ways people connect different locations of their minecraft world together. But what if you could add to that the functionality and intelligence of today's information networks.
With this project, I want to see if 1) you can give minecart networks that level of sophistication, and 2) what becomes possible with that sort of infrastructure, all while exploring real world topics related to the internet.

At this point I'm just tinkering with the low-end mechanisms: things like packet sending and receiving circuits, minecart exchange protocols and such. This is the result of my latest tinkering!
This is a device specifically designed to unpack a packet header, read the binary contents, and put it back without disturbing the information.
It took me a few tries to get it right, but I eventually ended up on using water bottles and shovels as my data, since it doesn't stack and it can be packed by hoppers.
The idea of course being that, with enough of these bits, I can encode things like mac addresses, ports, ip addresses, and other information such as packet length to help the network get the minecarts to their destination safely.
