Gyeongbokgung (Korean: 경복궁; Hanja: 景福宮), also known as Gyeongbokgung Palace or Gyeongbok Palace, was the main royal palace of the Joseon dynasty(1392~1910). Built in 1395, it is located in northern Seoul, South Korea. The largest of the Five grand palaces built by the Joseon dynasty, Gyeongbokgung served as the home of the royal family and the seat of government. (Wikipedia)

The existing Gyeongbokgung Palace was restored in the 19th century during the reign of King Gojong after being burned down by the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592. However, during the Japanese colonial period(1910~1945), 90% of the buildings were demolished, and construction to regain their original form has been underway since the late 1980s.

This map reproduces the scenery of Seoul in 1988, just before the first phase of Gyeongbokgung restoration work began, so few restored buildings remain compared to the present. Also, the Japanese Government-General of Korea building, which was demolished in 1995, still remains on this map.
