*** EDIT ***

I have abandonded this project as it got too hectic to maintain with so many version changes, but please feel welcome to visit this site for a different 1.14 gravestones in vanilla, that does possibly an even better job than mine! https://vanillatweaks.net/picker/datapacks/

Command: http://pastebin.com/sKiTxFMU
Confirmed to work in 1.10!
Command for minecraft 1.11: http://pastebin.com/5MzvkHsU
(MULTIPLAYER TOO)
Command for minecraft 1.12: https://pastebin.com/Ns4bzCMf (I made it separate just in case, but it should work in 1.11 too)

This took me quite a while, but I have successfully created Gravestones that collect and store items forever upon a players death. There isn't much else to explain, but it's very useful and WON'T over-ride any essential blocks, so it's not able to be abused to remove blocks. The gravestone only takes up one block, so it's more compact and friendly than other gravestone creations as well! Experience is not collected, however, so that getting back sooner rather than later is a bonus.

When you die, because the grave uses a metal trapdoor (the only non-full block doesn't get updated and disappear or burn), you will need any kind of pickaxe to pick it back up, any will do, even a wooden pickaxe, so it's no trouble!

Can't find your grave?
If you were underground, and died in a very cramped space with no air blocks, then it is most likely directly upwards on the surface, the grave's ability to do this is a last resort if no air blocks are found nearby and no override-able blocks are stood in, so go to where you died and dig up! Experience will be left where the player died, though.

Number of deaths occurred while testing: 520

Hello, to anyone seeing this, I have essentially abandoned this project, as minecraft had consistently every update broken my projects, and it got a bit frustrating. However, there is new service that offers data packs and included among them is a gravestones datapack, and it actually is roughly the same and better than my datapack, as it can even tell you where your grave was created! Please feel free to visit the site here at VanillaTweaks as they did an amazing job. 1.14 is the only version/page with the gravestones, hopefully this helps you all!

Is it possible for you to update this to 1.13's command structure? I know they messed with it alot and I am looking for a command or a datapack that would save my inventory when I die in 1.13.

Few questions,
  • On multiplayer, if two players die on the same general area, at the same time, will the command blocks be smart enough to tell who items are who's?
  • Or what if the second player dies on the exact same spot the first player dies? will the gravestone spawn above the gravestone? or will it replace the previous gravestone?
  • Lastly, can the command blocks tell where the gravestone spawned (Like coordinates of the gravestone) in the chat? If not, I highly recommend it as a feature! because there are so many times where me or my friends died and we go, "welp those items are lost forever! I don't remeber where I died"

Updates, me and a friend tested some stuff regarding the questions I had.
  • so when two players die at the same time, the gravestone is smart and will keep the items separate
  • Also when someone dies on the same spot the grave stone will not replace the other, but will spawn on top of the other NOTE: when a gravestone does spawn on top of another, and they both have item, break the bottom one first. because if you break the top one first, the items in the top gravestone will merge with the gravestone that is directly under it.
  • Also I'll say it again. I highly recommend adding some command blocks just to say in the chat where the gravestone has spawned. (And to add some layer of difficulty just have it say the X and the Z but not the Y)

Awsome command block creation, I will be using this almost allways now!

One last thing for my suggestion
  • Instead of saying in chat what you death coordinates are you can give the person who died a paper with the death coordinates the the paper name.

I would do that if I could, but it's not possible to easily get the strings of a player's or entity's co-ordinates, because that's not a statistic of a player we can access with command blocks, the easiest workaround is to spawn blocks and see how many you replaced, but that only works within like 1k blocks in a world, which is not acceptable for me, otherwise you have to use binary numbers with teleportation to figure out where the object is in the world, and that's like 50 command blocks. But I'm very glad that you are enjoying the command I made, I'm very happy how it turned out and yes, it distinguishes graves down to one block apart even when they die at the same time.

Does it now work on other dimensions in 1.11? Because previously it spawned a lot of graves and replacing blocks from my buildings.

I have fixed the glitch that caused the command to not work in other dimensions, I apologize for any inconvenience, and if anyone knows if it does it in the 1.9 or 1.10 version as well, please tell me and I can make an effort to fix them, but as they are past versions I don't know if there is a need to fix it or not.

I've not tried it out in other dimensions, can you tell me what you mean by "spawns a lot of graves"? Does it spawn them on top of you when you respawn, can you describe? Sorry for the slow reply
