The Roman Forum, commonly recognized by its Latin term Forum Romanum, is a rectangular forum in the heart of the city of Rome that is encompassed by the remains of numerous major ancient government structures. This site, which was formerly a marketplace, was known to ancient city residents as the Forum Magnum or just "The Forum" as it served as inspiration for all the fora outside of the City.
For generations, the Forum was the epicentre of daily life in Rome, serving as the location of triumphant processions and elections, as well as the place for public speeches, criminal trials, and gladiator contests, and as the hub of economic activities. Here, sculptures and shrines honoured the famous men of the city. It has been termed the most renowned gathering place on earth and across history. It was the bustling centre of ancient Rome. The Forum, situated in the narrow basin between the Palatine and Capitoline Hills, is a vast ruin of architectural remnants and sporadic archaeological digs that attracts at least 4.5 million tourists annually.
