'Ferret' Sloop
The 'Ferret' Sloop is a type of 12-gun, two-masted ship developed in the beginning of the 18th century. This particular sloop originally belonged to the British Royal Navy and was built on a Wet Dock in southern England. However, it was captured by pirates. As the long-boomed, single-masted designs were such demanding for sailors, the navy favored multiple-masted designs, which also had the advantage of longer decks, which carried more guns. Although, today, this vessel might be considered a schooner, and some might debate the use of the term sloop for multiple-masted vessels, the Royal Navy rated such vessels as sloops-of-war.
