The FDI program, led by the Directorate General of Armament (DGA) in close collaboration with the National Navy and the industrialists Naval Group, Thales and MBDA, participates in the renewal and strengthening of our surface fleet, in accordance with the Military Programming Act 2019-2025. By 2030, the five IFDs will make up one third of France’s leading frigates, the first two being delivered by 2025.
The IDF is a 4,000- to 4,500-tonne high-seas, multi-purpose, enduring vessel capable of operating, either alone or as part of a naval force, in all areas of anti-ship, anti-aircraft, anti-submarine, and special forces projection.
Heavily armed (Exocet MM40 B3C anti-surface missiles, Aster 15/30 anti-aircraft missiles, MU 90 anti-submarine torpedoes, remote-operated guns), the FDI can embark simultaneously a helicopter and a drone, and receive a special forces detachment with their two commando boats.
On the sensor side, they have some of the best sonars and their air and surface defenses are ensured by the most modern sensors, among which a multifunction radar with active antenna and fixed panels.
For the first time, a French frigate will be equipped with a single mast bringing together all the aerial sensors, allowing permanent 360° surveillance. The FDI will also be the first French frigates natively protected against the cyber threat, with a Data Center hosting a large part of the ship’s applications and allowing e-maintenance.
Finally, under the heading of operational innovation, the FDI inaugurates the concept of a centre dedicated to the fight against asymmetric threats, separate from the central operations (CO). Located behind the bridge, this centre will lead the fight against air and surface terrorist threats, including mini-drones and boat bombs.
Bringing together the best of French naval technology on a compact platform, the FDI is a powerful and innovative frigate designed to cope with evolving threats.

Le programme des FDI, conduit par la Direction générale de l’armement (DGA) en étroite collaboration avec la Marine nationale et les industriels Naval Group, Thales et MBDA, participe au renouvellement et au renforcement de notre flotte de surface, conformément à la loi de programmation militaire 2019-2025. Les cinq FDI constitueront à l’horizon 2030 le tiers des frégates françaises de premier rang, les deux premières étant livrées d’ici à 2025.
Les FDI sont des bâtiments de haute mer d’un déplacement de 4 000 à 4 500 tonnes, polyvalents, endurants et capables d’opérer, seuls ou au sein d’une force navale, dans tous les domaines de lutte : antinavire, antiaérien, anti-sous-marin et projection de forces spéciales.
Fortement armées (missiles antisurface Exocet MM40 B3C, missiles antiaériens Aster 15/30, torpilles anti-sous-marines MU 90, canons télé-opérés), les FDI peuvent embarquer simultanément un hélicoptère et un drone, et recevoir un détachement de forces spéciales avec leurs deux embarcations commandos.
Côté capteurs, elles disposent de sonars parmi les plus performants et leurs défenses air et surface sont assurées au moyen de senseurs les plus modernes, parmi lesquels un radar multifonctions à antenne active et à panneaux fixes.
Pour la première fois, une frégate française sera dotée d’un mât unique rassemblant l’intégralité des capteurs aériens, permettant une surveillance permanente à 360°. Les FDI seront également les premières frégates françaises nativement protégées contre la menace cyber, avec un Data Center hébergeant une grande partie des applications du navire et permettant l’e-maintenance.
Enfin, au titre de l’innovation opérationnelle, la FDI inaugure le concept de centre dédié à la lutte contre la menace asymétrique, distinct du central opérations (CO). Situé derrière la passerelle, ce centre dirigera la lutte contre les menaces terroristes aériennes et de surface, notamment les mini-drones et les embarcations piégées.
