Prehistory :
After the First World War, the Americ Star Line lost its prestigious Atlantic liners. At that time the German Mediterranean Linie(Deutsche Mittelmeer Linie) and German Southafrica Transatlantic Line(Deutsche Südafrika Transatlantik Linie) also faced the same problems so they thought why not support each other by funding a class of three ships together.
The Küstrin would be planned to be one of the most modern ships of that time and indeed she was in 1922. She featured new safety features such as a fire control system and they were converted to oil during construction so she was one of the first oil-fired ships in 1922.
Her interiors were designed in a common style of that period continuing the development that had already started before the first world war.
Her third-class spaces were also given attention featuring a dining room, a smoking room, and a ladies room. There were planned steerage spaces but those were removed early during construction and instead the third- class got more cabins increasing its capacity. A smart choice when the United States restricted immigrants from coming to them.
History :
Start of Construction : 1919
Launched : 1921
Start of Career : 1922
-1922 succesful Maiden Voyage to New York
-1923-1924 The other ships of the so-called K-Class entered service
-1926 collision with a small cargo ship getting slightly damaged near Southampton having to limp into port canceling the winter season service
-1929 as new ships entered service she was removed from the North Atlantic service being shifted to the South Atlantic service instead proving herself profitable with slight modifications
-1934 to avoid having to give the Küstrin to the Hamburg Süd as the Nazis rearranged German shipping she was sent into the shipyard being converted into a one-class cruise ship
-1937 send to the shipyard again for an extensive reconstruction making her better at cruising
-1939 during a cruise in the west-indies the captain landed the passengers in Florida trying to return to Germany as the second world war broke out. During the attempt, she was captured by the Allies failing to be scuttled by her crew.
-1941 the United States entered the second world war and the Küstrin would be converted into a troopship
-1944 during a convoy back to the United States the Küstrin was torpedoed by U243 sinking with 14 people dying during the sinking. U 243 would be sunk soon after that.
The ship is named in memory of the city Küstrin (Cüstrin until 1928) which was nearly completely destroyed during the second world war. The city still exists today with its old town in ruins reminding us of the absurdity of war.
