The Defender-class was put into action following NX-01 Enterprise's decommission and was a replacement to the Intrepid-type. Tasked with patrolling and clusters of systems, Defenders were the first responders to distress calls from nearby starships. The Admiralty decided to preserve the look of the NX-class and scaled it down into the Defender hence exterior similarities. Defender-class starships were fitted with a prototype deflector/sensor combination system under the saucer and also featured the new super-cooled warp core for delivering high amounts of power to the ship. The impulse engines were rated to the same output as the NX-class delivering excellent speed and maneuvering capabilities.
