The cathedral church of St Michael & All Angels is a Norman era cathedral that sits proudly on the southernmost island of Linford-upon-Avon, originally constructed in 1070 at the orders of William the Conqueror, the cathedral has been the site of expansions, renovations and murder.
The original cathedral sat on the site of a Saxon chapel which had fallen into disrepair under Edward the Confessor and was almost entirely demolished during Kalmarian raids on Linford in 1011; during which the current Archbishop of Linford was captured and executed in front of the cathedral. One year after the Norman conquest in 1067 the remains of the cathedral caught fire leaving just a few charred stones on the site. As a result, the cathedral was entirely rebuilt from the ground up between 1070 and 1077 in the gothic style. The east end of the nave was entirely demolished in 1096 and replaced with a longer arm that doubled the length of the existing building. The cathedral remains in the cruciform shape into the present day. In 1170 the archbishop of Linford, John Cundy the Younger, was murdered in the west transept of the cathedral by Knights of Henry II. Cundy was posthumously venerated with the cathedral becoming an important religious pilgrimage site. In 1174 the choir was severely damaged by a fire which made a major rebuild a necessity. The choir was entirely replaced and in 1175 the squared eastern end of the cathedral was replaced with a rounded ambulatory built to house the shrine of St John Cundy the Younger; another chapel was added beyond this and became known as Cundy’s crown built to house other relics relating to Cundy.
Work on the two chapels finished in 1184. In the early 15th century, the chapter house was entirely rebuilt with a library added to the complex.
During the dissolution of the monasteries, Linford surrendered in 1539 with King Henry VIII summoning the dead saint Cundy to court on a charge of treason. He was found guilty in his absence and the treasures of the shrine confiscated by the crown with the shrine itself being destroyed. the cathedral fell further into disrepair after the monks fled with the cathedral being on the brink of collapse until it was saved by a monetary gift by William III in 1690. In celebration of the massive restoration project that was undertaken a statue of William was erected in front of the south west tower and a new spire was added atop the same tower to complement the existing spire on the main tower. Both spires collapsed during the 1692 earthquake and were never rebuilt. The cathedral was designated a heritage site by the Walhampton monuments office in 1890(edited)
