I don't think you need to credit a source you based original art off of, especially considering that all content on wimedia commons is common domain and can be used for any purpose without credit.

What I personally do is put the image in a spoiler.
Like so:
Reference Image

As a bonus, the viewer doesn't need to open the image in a new tab to see what the real thing looks like.

I agree, it makes sense to include the reference image. But i wouldn't consider it to *require* credit.
