Speed-Packing - A Data Pack Contest!
What is it?
Speed-Packing is a contest where participants have to make data packs in a short time-span based on a topic. The topic will be revealed some time between UTC 2 p.m. and UTC 3 p.m. on 29th July, Thursday.
Rules
- Preparing a data pack for the competition in advance is not allowed.
- Entries must be made specifically for the competition.
- Entries must be submitted before UTC 2 p.m. on 30th July, Friday
- Entries must not be extensive. Don't make a data pack that's going to take me five hours to test. Overly extensive data packs will be disqualified.
- You are advised to use the in-built uploading system of PMC. If possible, do not use external download links. Links from sites I do not recognize will not be considered (Mediafire is acceptable)
- Late entries will not be considered.
- Do not ask for the topic before UTC 2 p.m. on the 29th.
- PMC Rules apply.
- No troll or joke data packs.
Judging will be done on the basis of:
- Creativity and Originality - Your data pack should be creative and original
- Execution - It should function smoothly and should be bug-free
- Efficiency - It should not have many redundant features in the inner workings
- Gameplay Balance - It should not make the game too easy or too hard (data packs that add a reasonable challenge are fine, but data packs that summon charged creepers at the player every 2 seconds are not)
- Entertainment Value - The data pack should be fun to test.- Don't make a data pack that adds a banana that can be crafted after a 10-hour-long process which does basically nothing. That's not fun.
- Content - The data pack should add a decent amount of content. The more content you add, the more points you get here.
- Bugs - The data pack should be as bug-free as possible.
- Abstraction - The inner workings should be more-or-less hidden from the casual user in gameplay.
If you want to enter, say so in the comments below. You will be pinged during the declaration of the topic. Once the topic is declared, you may start making your data pack. Once you finish, post it on PMC and include the phrase "Entry for Speed-Packing Contest" in the title. Then post the link to the data pack page in the comments here.

Happy to see that you made it!
Yaay, you made it!
Great! I'll be trying it out right away!
Sorry about the digital scream.
Anyway, try to avoid placing too many sailboats down... I've found it (might) cause some problems with sail customization. Too wiped out right now to fix it though (if it even needs fixing). Just be cautious.

*proceeds to try it*
._. looking back, I probably shouldn't have said that, but now I think I know exactly what was going wrong XD
Here is my entry. Is there a bonus for extremely stupid ideas?
Hm... no there isn't...
Edit: However, looking at your data pack, it seems you're going to get 10/10 for creativity

I finished my datapack entry https://www.planetminecraft.com/data-pack/gamingbarn-s-pirates-entry-for-speed-packing-contest/
I think that was the quickest I have ever made a datapack.

Great! I'll be testing it soon!
Content - The data pack should add a decent amount of content. The more content you add, the more points you get here. This is biased towards the people who have more time, which means the people in bad timezones would not get a lot of points in this area. (e.g. me and YokaiS).
Additionally it doesnt reward the people with difficult to add content, maybe change the description up a bit
Don't worry, it's mainly to prevent people from submitting a data pack that has near-zero content without me being able to do anything about it in judging - as long as you don't provide too less content, most people are going to get similar marks in this section (also, more difficult to add content will get more marks than the same amount of less difficult to add content)
Okay, phew... my datapack has undergone some cutbacks... hopefully it'll be done on time. I'm so close.
Good luck!
How much time left?
About 5-6 hours left, make sure you submit on time!
I don't have enough time then.
Oof! Sad, I was looking forward to seeing your work!
Added some fields in the judging section (content, bugs, abstraction)
Ooh, good job! I'll be trying it out soon!
Maybe you could judge the datapacks on compatibility based on the datapack conventions as part of the judging criteria
I'm not very familiar with those, and that would kind of put people who don't know about them at a disadvantage.
General trends that cause incompatibility will cause mark deduction in the Efficiency score though.

Can I make a pirate ship data pack and use my pirate cannon data pack I made about a year ago, or do I have to make new cannons?
If you clarify how much of it is from the pre-made data pack, you can (and marks will mainly be given on the newly made content only)
Thanks. Are resource packs allowed?
Yes, they are! (as long as there's also a data pack lol)
Slight change in rules, 6 extra hours have been added to the submission period
too bad that still covers my school day lmao
lol
Quick! Start data packing, everybody who entered! You only have 24 hours from now! Good luck, and may the best data pack win!

Same as the other guy I also had no idea for the datapack. I do have ocean themed datapack planned but it has little connection to Pirate but I would still participate in this if you host more
Oof ok. I think my next contest will be give you guys more time to make the entries lol, one day is way too less for most people to make a good data pack.
I don't really have a problem with one day deadline but it'll probably be good for those in difference timezone. I love the concept anyway will be looking forward to it!
Sorry man, wont be able to submit anything. ZERO ideas for a pirate theme datapack.
Oof, ok.
Very excited to try these packs tho.
They are pretty cool, I plan to try them all together with some friends when I'm done.
also umm i don't think you revealed the theme at the time you promised. You released it at like 1am utc on the 28th, while you said you were going to release it at like 2pm on the 29th. You released it at 6pm for me, and I couldn't do anything today because I was at an amusement park with my family for the entire day. Since it's 24 hours, I would have to submit my thing at 6pm on the 29th, so I only have 17 hours from now. Subtract that number with the amount of time for me sleeping which would be 9 hours, and 2 hours for the program I'm taking at 10-12, and like 1 hour for me to rest and eat food after I get home cause I'm not a robot, and 3 hours for me to finish all my summer homework for the day and I only have 2 hours to make my datapack. There is no way I'm gonna be stressing myself out doing that.
sorry I don't think I'll be submitting anything :(

Ah... time zones can be confusing - It's the 29th where I live. I revealed at UTC 1:30
Edit - wait, I think it still is UTC 29th tho, because UTC would have to be over 24 hours behind IST for 7:00 am IST 29th to be 1:30 am UTC 28th
Edit - Decided to add 6 extra hours

damn that's generous
I think MattZachZion and Chimerabot might want to be part of it as well
Hm.... well I guess as long as they submit in time they can take part.
I didn't anticipate being busy for like half the day today, so... er, I'll try to do my best...
Can I make a datapack that takes an old idea with a unique spin on it?
